Alright, what the hell??

I put in a new alternator this morning and the thing still won't start. :(

When I turn the igntion I can hear my air compressor's 12volt clutch engauging but nothing else??

Starter??Ignition switch??Starter solenoid??

Help a PO'd 73-87 owner out. :( :(

LOHRTBT 03-07-2003 12:46 PM

Sounds to me like your starter more specific..your Solenoid is shot.

And to think the truck has no air and no way to get air to it so I can get to the solenoid. :( Could I reach it from the engine bay or do I need to go from underneath?
I'm gonna have to pull all the lines and get some shrader valves and air this bish up manually. :( :whine:

LOHRTBT 03-07-2003 12:52 PM

lmao!! YOu can try banging on the solenoid...just beside the starter...its attached to it. with a wooden broom handle and have your old lady try starting it. More than likely it will start like that..unless its totally fried. :)

I'll try that on my lunch later. I'll let you guys know. I was hoping it wasn't starter related but had a feeling that's what it was. :(

LOHRTBT 03-07-2003 12:58 PM

At least you have a new alt now!! :)

Low87 03-07-2003 02:32 PM

Sounds like you need to keep Jessie away from it. Just a thought....

low 84 03-07-2003 02:38 PM

that sux man. try banging on the starter itself with a hammer, it could be catching inside the case.

Tom 03-07-2003 03:34 PM

if all your emissions crap is out the way, and your really skinny, you can [after hours of trying] replace the starter from the engine bay. I am 5' 10" and 135 pounds, with maybe 11% body fat, and I would have to sit in the engine bay to do it. Good luck!! :D

LOHRTBT 03-07-2003 04:09 PM

Damn, I hope it's not windy in AZ. You wear weighted shoes?

79BIG10 03-07-2003 04:20 PM

Izzy would be more like me having to lift the truck up and get under there.

82 Silverado 4X 03-07-2003 04:53 PM

Have you tried turning on the headlights and hit the key with someone watching the lights?
If lights go out when you hit the key you may need to check your battery, battery connections and the battery cable connections at the starter solonoid.

:D If I can just get the bags aired up I'll be fine. I'm no featherweight that's for sure. *shaking keg gut*

Lights all work when igntion is on. I'm gonna get some T fitting so I can manually fill the bags and replace the starter next weekend and the solenoid. Probably replace all wires that go to and from it while I'm down there. :)

LOHRTBT 03-07-2003 07:37 PM

Did you try bangin on the starter yet?? ANd I thought you had compressors that aired up your bag..or just the air commander/??

Yep, no dice. Nope only the air commander. I'm gonna get a portable comp that runs off the cigarette lighter now. :D

Oh I know that, I may not know the most about fixing the drivetrain but I know that much. :D

Izzy 03-16-2003 03:02 AM

Dammit. Put in a new ignition module, no dice. Put in a new starter, no dice. :(
We traced the problem between the igntion to the starter. We're thinking the igntion switch. Because we put a screwdriver across the starter posts and it had power so it's nothing after that point. Igntion switch is under the dash on the column, correct?

BTW I got the drip rails finally finished, cut down shift arm for billet knob to fit and the hood on. Should have the pan body worked tomorrow and have the POS running I hope. :D

Izzy- Yes you're right. To get to it you need to take off the lower part of the dash panel. Then loosen the 4 nuts that are holding up a U shaped brace. The column will then be loose enough to drop down a bit and you can then see the wires grouped together going into the switch about halfway down the column. Remove the plastic connections then you can unbolt the ignition switch. Best to have someone with small hands remove the connection. Also make sure the battery is disconnected.

Thanks I was able to get it done but this didn't even fix it. :(
Could it be something w/ the igntion inside of the column, maybe the lock cylinder itself?
This is really pissing me off. :whine: :whine:
