Do I need to hot tank my block???
3 Attachment(s)
Hi there,
against my better judgement I used walnut shell to blast & clean off the rust off my engine block....but some / lots of walnut specs got into the valley and on the crank. Am I stuck with having to hot tank my block or is there a solution / oil I can run through it to take out the specs? Thanks! |
Re: Do I need to hot tank my block???
wipe what you can up... spray the rest off with some brake cleaner.. clean out the oil pan run some fresh oil and change the oil filter after a while of running..
what i would do... unless i want to rebuild it... no sense taking it all apart without rebuilding the thing. |

im going to move this to engines for more better responses

Whats the worse that can happpen? ruin it? You can always rebuild it after it has problems in stead of re-ringing it now. That kinda how we look at it.

Re: Do I need to hot tank my block???
You better just start taking it apart. You will never get it all out by hand. Remember if its rough enough to knock rust off its going to destroy the bearings. You need to tear the engine completely down. Pull the heads cam/lifters and crank rods and pistons. Those pieces are small enough they can and will make it past the oil pump screeen. IN the end its up to you. But if you dont tear it down I would start setting large amounts of spare cash aside for the rebuild thats coming.

Yep... no way I'd even attempt to clean that out and use it without a complete teardown. Chock it up to a lesson learned... :)

It's organic, which is one of the benefits of using walnut shells...but it's all got to come apart at this point as that stuff is going to block an oil passage or get into a bearing and that's it.
