lots of play..

ive got alot of play in my steering wheel. it feels like more in the steering box then anything. checked tie rods. inner and outter. all fine. and pitman and iddler arm are fine. its just the box has alot of play.
how much is a new box?
is it hard to replace?
any other boxes that are a "upgrade"

thanks, Eric

To give you an idea. I think I paid close to $500 for a new steering box installed by Big O tires. Not sure if make model matter but that was for a 1-ton 4x4 dually

Check where the steering box is bolted to the frame. If your box leaks any fluid at all, the fluid could help the bolts loosen up over time. I just fixed this problem on mine, 1000% improvement. :smoke:

If the bolts to the frame are not loose you can try tightening the gears by loosening the nut on top and tightening down the allen wrench bolt in the center. Usually this is a stop gap at best and the best thing is to replace the steering box.

Can it be loose and worn out inside and still not leak? Mine is not leaking. Idk if or when it was replaced last. It still looks good.. Just loose
