12 bolt from a truck ??????
ALSO WHAT YEAR DID THEY STOP MAKING 12 BOLTS???????
my 12 bolt is from a truck---and i just got another one yesterday
for free for a spare ,,,Had a guy tell me the one from a truck is no
good ... just stood there and listened to him run his mouth..
now hes got me wondering????? please help.

12bolts from a car are stronger due to a larger pinion gear shaft.
As for it being no good, I disagree. That is like the blanket statement the 9" Fords are superior. Last year for trucks was 1981.

rage'nrat638 03-19-2003 07:52 PM

that is strange

would'nt you think they would have a stronger pinon in a truck?
why should cars be so lucky ...... haven't ran across any car 12 bolts must be why they are so hard to find.....1981 ok.wonder what year was the last for cars????

CAR REARS DON'T INTERCHANGE WITH TRUCKS. The last year for cars was like 1971 then all GM went to corporate 10 bolt 8.5". gotta watch around the 69-70 era as all the gm makes had their own unique 12 bolts. chevys being most popular of course. best place to look for one under a truck from 78-81 is a diesel and there are plenty of dead ones in the bone yards. Nothing wrong with that truck 12 bolt. Use it.
Unless your putting 900 HP through it at the track every week ;)

rage'nrat638 03-19-2003 08:41 PM

well thats what i got under my truck ,,,it will be something to lookout for with this new engine 850h.p. guess i will have to stay away from the track...very sticky....:flag:

I won an auction for a 12 bolt truck rear(drum to drum) on Ebay. It should be here any day. I bid $100 and was the only bidder. I can't believe how affordable the the eaton posi and gear sets are, can't wait to build it!

airmale , keep my email and phone number around ( see ad for 84 front clip in NJ ) I hate to tell you this now but I would have sold you a 12 bolt for that and no freight charges .I live an 75 minutes from you. I also have a friend with place in Margate that I visit several times during summer months. DAVE

I looked for 12 bolts when I was at the yard last time. I only went to one yard but I checked em all and then some. No 12 bolts anywhere, I bet they probly had them in the shed up front. Next time Im gonna ask if I can see what they have in the big shed.

Tom 03-20-2003 04:12 PM

Eddie, you didnt find any 12bolts? Give BASELINE AUTO RECYCLERS a call. They rock. I can even stop by there on my way to work one day and pick one up for ya if you go with them.

rage'nrat638 03-20-2003 04:18 PM

Trucks didn't really need that much strength in the pinion area as they were low powered. Chevelle's with 396 and 454 backed by 4speed it would be warranted. Last year for a 12bolt in a Car would be 1973. 12bolts for cars are priced like gold. Moser is making them again though.

If you really want some strength for that much power and use slicks, you need an aftermarket setup. I don't think a stock 12bolt will hold up to that kind of abuse for long.

How about a 9" housing with Stranges' 12bolt drop in. Lighter, less hp loss, no c-clips
