14 bolt SF v 14 FF

What is the strength differences between the 14 bolt SF and the 14 bolt FF ? my 1986 Chevy K20 has a semi floating 14 bolt and was wondering if it as good as a full floater .

The biggest difference other than ring gear size is, on a full floater you can take the axle out of the truck without pulling c-clips. They are both pretty bulletproof as far as diffs go.

Are there any easy lockers for the 14 bolt SF ? the truck is only going to have slightly bigger mud tires 265 or 285 probably .

Are there any direct replacement 14 bolt FF for my truck ? I put one in my 1987 GMC R20 and it didn't have a parking brake because the cables would not work because it was out of a 77 Chevy pickup .

14ff has the hub sticking out inside the lug nuts, semi has nothing, like a 1/2 ton axle.

Except directly at the splines, the semi-floater axles are bigger diameter than full floaters. Monstrous 33 splines, they're huge. You rock crawlers may have seen one, but I've never seen one break including some deep into the 9's.
There are a few lockers/posi's available, you can do a quick search.
Oh, and they're about 100lbs lighter than the full floater.
No need to swap one out until you've proven you have enough power to bust a SF, IMHO.

I agree. But if you blow it up, throw it in the junk pile and get a FF.
