master cylinder question
 
there is only brake fluid in the front section of my cylinder. is it suppose to be filled up in the back section too?

thank you! hopefully that is the reason why my brakes are so soft. (sorry for the rookie question)

One reservoir is for front brakes and the other is for the rears.... My guess is you have a leak somewhere. This is designed this way so that if you do have a leak, which it appears you do, you still have one set of brakes to stop you.

ok thank you. the rear didnt have any fluid in it at all and when i hit the pedal it goes straight to the floor. now what?

Grab a buddy to help bleed the brakes. Start with the farthest from the master cylinder, work to the closest. If you're really really new to working on stuff, there are some quick how-to's on youtube.

in that case your brake warning light should b coming on

try bleeding them but more than likely you have a leak and wood need to find and repair

The pedal pressure in my 1971 was unreliable to the max. One time the brake light did come on. (Both resevoirs (sp) had fluid though)Took it in and got a new master cylinder, The mechanic said rebuilt master cyc are unreliable. drain all lines, refill. So far so good. FYI
