Overdrive In A 1982

I was looking at a truck to buy. It is a 1982 1/2 ton with a 305, the trans selector has 1,2,3,n,r,park. with the word overdrive written across the top. What type of transmission would this probably be? The point being I would pull the 305 and replace with a 454. Should I also swap my th400 or use the tranny already in the truck?:flag:

Only the 82's and 83's had the selector that has the words Automatic Overdrive. The tranny is a 700R4. Unfortunately the 82-84 trannys were the worst. They only had a 27 spline shaft for the converter. Any stout block will strip the torque converter shaft. That is one reason GM went to a 30 spline shaft on 85 and later 700R4's. Use the 400TH or get a rebuilt 700R4 to last behind the 454.
The gear selector should be R-N-D-3-2-1 right?

Your right that is how the gear selector is set up. I believe the 400 would definately be the best bet.
