frame clean up
Tonight I'll be cleaning a hopefully painting the rear half of my frame. I figure I'll start by taking a wire brush to everything and getting it clean. Trying to figure the best way to do this with everything still together. Any suggestions? Should be lots of tedious fun! :D
i would get a compressor and a grinding wheel or wire attachement for it. Then order some POR 15 and coat everything on it. :)
Dave, are you forgetting that rust makes POR stick better?
but you want a smooth surface to have a smooth finish.
all you would have to do is after cleaning it off ...spray it with water and wait a couple days ..surface rust |
So....Costanza...what your saying is that POR 15 is Repelled by clean surface!! lol It will slide off unless it has rust to help it stick and look good?? ?hehehhee
I painted my frame with POR-15 from the cab back and would not recommend it. I used a wire brush to remove the loose crap, and then used POR's prep. products. My frame had very little rust and it did not adhere very well. I would only recommend this product if your frame IS rusted, and I mean true rust---Not surface rust that can be sanded off.
I would recommend www.EastwoodCompany.com 's "Chassis Black". Easy to apply, very durable, and it looks awesome. |
I know tons of guys that have used it on rear axles and diff's and did the process like I said,...they love it and it works great.
use what you want Greg...but I dont know of any other product that gets so much praise. |
i'm a loyal fan of por-15, never had a single problem with it, ever, on anything..

POR15 will only stick to metal, and it adheres better to RUSTED metal. It WON'T stick to paint regardless of how much you scratch it up, if you have paint on the frame, get rid of it.
I have only praise for POR15 and it stuck well to rusted as well as sandblasted parts. Example: (closeup shows how rusty it was and I used a putty knife to scrape the paint, that's all) Looks pretty good to me :D http://www.captkaoscustoms.com/images/rustydiff2.jpg http://www.captkaoscustoms.com/images/Eatonsetup.jpg http://www.captkaoscustoms.com/images/POR15diff1.jpg How I cleaned it up.. 1) Easy Off Oven Cleaner (just followed the directions) More than one application ( 2) I believe 2)scraped off the paint off that would come off, 3) Easy Off again 4) Wash off 5) Dry (air hose) 6) POR 15. |
Looks good! I hadn't thought about Easy Off. Thanks for the pics Chris.
I use Easy-Off to clean all greasy parts. You're welcome.
Be sure to use a mask for all the dust.....
And eye protection.
Thanks for the warnings guys, don't worry about that, I never forget my safety equipment!
In the past My father and I have always wire wheeld our frames and used a sealer then painted them. I dont remeber what the sealer was.
Whatever you do, if you use POR-15...DO NOT get it on your skin...the stuff is damn near impossible to get off!
-Jeff |
I took the wire wheel to it last night. Probably not going to use POR-15 since I couldn't get all the paint off. I guess I'll just have to find a rust inhibitor paint to use.
Use some Easy-off on it and a paint scraper. If you have already done that, get some paint stripper and put it on there.
If easy off doesnt work thats weird that stuff works awesome.
