Which Rear bags with trailing arms
 

Hello guys I'm a new member but I have been following builds on this site for a while. I just got a 68 swb and I'm about to bag it and I need to know what brand and size bag works the best in the rear when bolting the bag directly to the trailing arm and frame with a notch. I'm gonna do it this way temporarily until I can tear into it and do a nice 4 link setup. Any other advice is welcome.

Firestone F6781/255c or Slam Specialties RE-6's as the 1st choice (or similar sized different brand dbl convoluted bags) or...... Firestone F6873/224c or Slam RE-7's as the 2nd choice.

The difference being the larger bags require less air psi for similar heights. It basically depends on the exact set-up & ride height intended to determine which is optimum.

I'm planning on running a relatively low ride hight. I also was wondering do u need cups up front or is there some other way to get as low as possible without spindles or dropmember. I will be doing something more extreme later but just want to get low as possible for now. Also does anyone make drop spindles for 6lug drums?

For a relatively low ride height (8" rear drop), I would do 2" lowering blocks between the truck arms & rear housing; relocate the shock brackets for better geometry & more travel; swap a long, adjustable Panhard bar into place to minimize side shift; & use the smaller/1st choice bags. You'll need to poke a hole in the bed floor to utilize all of a bolt-in c-notch w/this set-up on a 29.5" tire. I recommend CPP's HD bolt-in c-notch or one of Porterbuilts c-notches.

Even if you do something 'extreme' later, drop spindles are typically part of the equation. They're money well spent/invested in the combination of parts. There are no current manufacturers that make a drop spindle for drum brake applications.

Some guys opt to set the bags deeper into the front lower control arms by recessing/welding a section of pipe w/a large enough diameter so that the bag cannot rub against any metal (typically 8" dia pipe minimum) while being flush w/both the top & bottom surfaces of the arm.

An alternative to drop spindles for keeping drums and getting lower is stepped lower arms. I'd go with the spindles myself.

i did get it bagged. at first i just cupped the lowers and put bags on the stock trailing arms. i have since put spindles and disc brakes in the front and a notch and wishbone 3 link in the back. next i think im going to go with some tubular control arms and 'z' the front or maybe a dropmember if i can hit the lottery. ill put some pictures up as soon as i can figure out how to get them on here.

I went with dominator 2600s. They worked out well, but i really didnt get to put many miles on it before i tore it apart again to notch and link it. This is how the truck sat layed out with this setup. no notch and just cupped lowers up front.

The new rear setup i went with is a wishbone 3 link tat Nate at porterbuilt fabbed up for me. i told him i wanted something different and i like a wishbone and this is what i got! its exactly what i wanted. i made the bridge, bag plates, and front wishbone crossmember. i think it turned out pterry good. The only thing i dont like is that i dont get much lift with bag over axle, but its ok.

you can change your lower link bars and put the bags on them to gain more lift.

bag on axle is great for towing

I used RE6's in the rear of my '69. RE7's work, too. I had them in the front, but the back required less weight and the kit I bought came with 7's front and 6's rear.

im planning on using ss7s, but i cant decide if i want electric valves or manual. pros and cos of each ?

I have a cpp c notch in the rear of my 67 and 2" blocks, and was planning on using the ss7 bag also. But with a few people saying they are using the re6's it makes me wonder what is the difference between the ss and re bags?? I also am looking for a fairly low ride height for the daily but may possibly do a little towing with the truck also. I want to just set them up as a manual system with schrader valves for now. Any suggestions on the best bag for my situation??
