Trailering Special?
My possible donor vehicle for my truck build is a late 70?'s suburban... Apparently its a "Trailering Special" with a 454. I need the 454 provided it's a 4 bolt block and I'm hoping it has a 12 bolt diff.. With the "Trailering Special" is it more likely that the 454 is a 4 bolt?

Re: Trailering Special?
Just wondering why do you need a 4 bolt block? The 2 bolt big blocks will handle more than the majority of the free world will ever throw at them. 700 plus hp on 2 bolt, if you get closer to 800 go with splayed caps, which will start with a 2 bolt block anyway.

Re: Trailering Special?
I ran a 2 bolt 30 over 4.250 stroke cranked production 454 block im my dragster for a year or so. I used to twist it to 8k. Held together like a champ. 7.90's in the quarter. Not sure of the HP rating as i never had it on a dyno.

Re: Trailering Special?
2 bolt Big Block is more than strong for a regular truck.

Re: Trailering Special?
Want this engine to last. It'll be 600+ hp and my engine builder has his heart set on a 4 bolt for some reason...

Re: Trailering Special?
eh 2 bolt is fine at 600hp level for ever. If he's concerned about strength, put splayed caps on it. I've ran pretty wild 2 bolt big blocks on nitrous up at 800hp level and no problems.

Re: Trailering Special?
Good luck on it being a 4 bolt main block. Most of all the 454's that came out of trucks originally(the ones I have gotten over the years anyway) have always been 2 bolt. Same with a steel crankshaft they have always been cast.

Re: Trailering Special?
All the 454s I've had came out of trucks, all were 2 bolt mains. One or two of them were in crew cab dually's, still 2 bolt.
If you just got to have a 4 bolt, then splay the caps, it's stronger than a factory 4 bolt. But I think it's overkill. I had a 500+ 468, spun to 7500 quite a bit, never a problem. Was even cast crank and small rods. |
Re: Trailering Special?
All the pickup 454s i have seen have 2 bolt mains;the early (73-74) units seem to have forged cranks ...later ones cast ...may have been when they switched to the peanut port head.
As a rule 4 bolt mains only came on square port hi perf car motors. And on the tall deck medium duty motors |
Re: Trailering Special?
my 83 454 was a 4 bolt block.
