hmmmm rattle rattle...
Hey guys i was driving my truck tonight and i noticed a noise i have never heard before its a typr of rattle coming from the rear and its not my tailgate rattling...i know my pinion seal is bad do you think it could be the pinion bearing or could it be the carrier bearing...i dont know if i just noticed it because it was quiet outside or if it just showed up but i can also only hear it when im doing about 15-20 mph after that it goes away...any help would be appreciated thanks! Re: hmmmm rattle rattle...
just a thought i might be wrong could it be loose exhaust hanger?? or the spare tire hanger?? dunno just a thought
|
Re: hmmmm rattle rattle...
nah not the exhaust hanger i actully just had those rewelded a few months ago and i dont have a spare tire or spare tire hanger....also could it be a bad wheel bearing?

Re: hmmmm rattle rattle...
If you only hear the noise while going a certain speed, there's a 65% chance that its something in the drive line. I would check the wheel bearings, but I'm leaning more towards something inside the rear diff. From my experiences wheels bearing don't rattle they grind more.

Re: hmmmm rattle rattle...
ok so does it sound kinda like a pinion bearing?
|
Re: hmmmm rattle rattle...
You can always jack the rear end up so both tires are off the ground, block the front tires, start the truck, put it in gear, have someone give it a little gas, and CAREFULLY look and listen to the back end.

Re: hmmmm rattle rattle...
If that seals bad who knows how much dust and dirt could be visiting the races of that pinion bearing and contaminating your diff fluid.

Re: hmmmm rattle rattle...
hmmm ok i think ill try and change the seal and bearing here in the next few days anybody know if its a difficult process or not?

Re: hmmmm rattle rattle...
one thing thats for sure you need to set the proper bearing preload. did a quick search on google and found this http://www.differentials.com/install.html but someone on here can prolly give a more simplistic explanation for ya . I was always told a few crush sleeves come in handy when its goin back together if you dont't get the correct pinion depth. Can't be that crazy tho its just an old chevy rear end!

3.73's new froms jegs is $203 and thats either yukons or richmonds but i would look around on craigslist should be able to find some on there cheaper |
Re: hmmmm rattle rattle...
Im sure if your pinion bearing is shot u should be able to get some play out of it by lifting up and down on the pinion. "Fixwhataintbroke" had a great suggestion to run the truck carefully on some jackstands and listen for any noise. Don't go buy gears with out inspecting whats in there first. Hopefully all goes well bud.
