Backspacing. I know its a dead horse but it needs a good beatin!
 

I have a 69 c10 with stock width rear end. i am looking into getting some wheels vintiques 15x10 truck rallies (6 lug). they offer them in either 4.5 or 5 inch backspacing and i would like to run 28x12x15 mickey thompson s/r's with about a 2/4 drop and was wondering which backspcing would work best and what other guys are running.

1st, I recommend you measure your truck w/the current wheels to ensure things will work as expected (think of it as reverse engineering).

A 69 w/the narrower 6-lug housing could do both of the back-space dimensions listed @ the 4" drop proposed. When you start getting to the 6+ inches of rear drop, the back space limitations become much more critical.

Id go with the 5". On the shorter rear end(pre-70) ,with a fleetside bed, 5-5" backspace on a 10" wide wheel puts the wheel pretty much centered in the wheel well laterally.

Coming from someone that has gone from 15.5 to 18.5 wide tires, you really need to make sure the wheels, but more importantly, the tires will clear. You need to know the cross section of the tire which is the widest part of the tire buldge. You can't go by tread width listed. The tire is widest at the center of the buldging sidewall and that is the part that will rub if too big.....not the wheels. I will tell you that if you have a coil rear, the inner wheel well is all you have to worry about. If it's a spring pack, I'm not sure if the springs become a problem before the wells will.

The wheel wells on a leaf spring truck are the problem before the leafs. I have a '69 short step in the driveway now. It has 265 75 15 on the original wheels from my Jimmy. I want to do an axle flip in the back and go with 275 60 15 BFG drag radials. It looks like a 15x8 wheel with 3 1/2" BS would work.

I am probably going to mount the tire on one of my 15x10 Centerline ProTruck wheels as a starting point and see how much clearance I have. Will be interested to see what other responders say.
