big pblock, big truck, some cam ?'s
 

Hey all,
I am rebuilding/replacing the engine in my C60.
It is tall deck truck block, the 427 kind. I ended up with a brand new short block, sans cam. I have the original small port small valve truck heads, recconditioned and ready to go on, no port work, no trick springs....stock (for the truck) valve size.

Obviously this is a big heavy truck, but it won't be asked to do really heavy truck stuff. More like a recreational tow rig, or a one ton pickup, (as compared to say a dump truck) anyway, it will keep its stock manifold and big Q jet, and its big cast iron exhausts, but will get true dual exhaust. With a big double disk clutch and its small valves I am not building a race motor. But I would like decent runner that's sounds healthy and gives me my best shot of being a good match for the combo. I don't know how the stock cam performed or how it was specced or if I can even still get one. I also don't know how much lift this head/spring combo will accept. Would a small after market hydraulic roller be suitable?


Got any recommendations or words of advice?

I would call the cam manufacturer and tell them what you have and what you want it to do so they can recommend a cam for you.I did that last year when I built my 396 .called comp cams and used the cam they recommended and am very happy with it .

I talked to comp cams and maybe it was just the person I talked to, but I was less than impressed. I told them I had a C60 with a 5 speed and a 6.91 rear end and they asked what kind of R's I was turning in the 1/4.

I think I would talk to someone else then ....just sayin. Don't remember who I talked to but we didn't talk about 1/4 mile !!!!

The times I called the cam help techline it always proved to be good advice. I would say the a cam like the High energy 268h is always a good choice for light builds Or you might think about a split design cam since the valves are smaller than a normal bigblock. Like a dual energy 260ish. I think it would be hard to beatsomething in that range.

No one has any real experience with the truck heads? What kind of lift will they take? Is there any benefit to going with a roller ? In short ....Has anyone actually built a truck block in a truck?
Oh and thank you for the advice so far...keep it coming oh and where would I get a stock cam if I wanted to do that?

Only cams I'll run in my stuff, I have probably 4 on the shelf, along with a bunch of random ones my grandpa collected when he was still around doin BB stuff.
