New engine build 406 SBC

Well as some of you know the old engine I had was a rip off from the builder.
So I started with what I had left for parts on the old build and bought a standard bore 400 block. Just found out that I got ripped again!!! the number 3 cap does not go to this block. I know I could installed new caps line bore and hone. But really for all of that extra work I am done!!!!

I bought a new Dart SHP block, along with a new crank. so here is the parts line up.

CP forged bullet pistons -1 CC dome
RHS 220 heads 72 cc
Howards 294/300 cam ( 241/247 @ .050) 545/565 lift
Howards retro hyd roller lifters
H beam cap screw scat rods
Scat crank.
Smith Bros push rods
Standard ratio roller rockers
Single plane high rise PP intake
750 race demon carb
MSD box and dist

We are setting comp ratio to 10.8.1 ..pump gas engine

Marv,... I know you told me so about the block, all good brother. SO the next time we see each other lets make it at the speed way.. :metal:

I tried to use a stock block and in the end nothing but a huge waste of time. Unless you know that the engine ran, and did not spin the mains, or break the crank in a 400 the SHP block will save you some heart ache and money.

SO any one need a standard bore block that needs to have new caps on it and line bored?? 509 block, standard bore magged and ready to go LMAO first 100 bucks takes it.

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

well a 406 that is running low 10's does not sound like a street engine but more of a drag engine. As for cost I would have to add it up, I re used the heads, intake, carb ign, v covers, etc from the old 383 build. But I would think some where in the 6000 + range ??

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

LMAO too funny Marv. Well at least now I will have no over heating issues, the deck will be able to take the stress. You dont happen to have a single plate NOS kit laying around do you??? Since I am running lines and wires great time to add that in as well. The 8.2 rear end wont get me half way around the block now.

Well the new block is off to be prepped.
I have to say it is very nice, And I just read on the net that the dart block will give me 30 more hp and I think it should make about 578.37 HP @ 6400 so add 30. HA HA ( I am kidding guys, inside joke with Marv)

Marv I think it will be going on Becks dyno. ( unless you have an idea?) Once done you want to meet me in PHX?? for the tune on the little SBC

Good deal Steve, I really hope this one works out for you!! It should being what it is.

BTW, here is some info on the Eagle Field event I mentioned: http://eaglefielddrags.com/

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

It's only worth the full 30 if you put the stickers on both sides LOL. Honestly the more solid cylinder walls will promote better ring seal and that always means more power,, errr umm less LOST power that is.. Just like the 'right' oil can add 3 to 5 to 10HP,, it all adds up.

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

Thanks guys..

I am pushing to get the truck done, The demon carb will go up for sale and a new SS Quickfuel will be going 830 vs the 750 I have now. The temps up here kill me not having a choke. 27 F coming into work, thought about taking the Harley in but way too cold for a 6 mile drive LOL :waah:

Super ..dunno you are gonna have to give the jump and two lengths and you off the bottle..

So Marv you in on the dyno session once its done??

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

The jump and two in an 1/8mile? Not sure you will need that much.

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

How in the hell would that work, I give you the move you back out of it so I can get two and then you hit it again?? Sounds like bracket car crap to me..
Lets see how does that go, car leaves wheels up 600 feet out the cars stops like it has a chute open and then speeds up again, LMAO

Ok heads up, no lengths, your off the bottle and street tires ( not cheaters either real street tires.) drop the psi and let it rip. That is what I am running so even up, let the pretty girl drop the flag and we run em. I am working to get it done by the event, I have low hopes though, tone of stuff yet to do, but come fall sounds good for the west events. I am on track for mid to late june being done.

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

So wait a minute Steve, you already handicapped me with no bottle :) So much for heads up :mm:

I run a street tire, it's got a DOT marking on it with tread. It's called a Mickey Thompson ET Drag Radial. I even run them at about 18-20 PSI due to the wheel/tire combo and have put bunches of miles on them. :waah:

What next, do I need to start in 2nd?

I really want to see the truck at the event, so quit typing and get it done man.. Heck, Bring Marv with you! :ito:

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

Q: Are you using retrofit roller lifters because you got them before the SHP block or because you prefer them over the later factory roller lifter setup (or something else)?

GMR-PERFORMANCE 02-07-2012 10:33 AM

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

I already had them bought. I do not have the stock OEM roller parts. so using what I got.

YEA YEA handicap.. HA HA I am all throttle no bottle .. with a 8.2 front load,.. HMM I hit it too hard it will be a rear load ....into the bed that is :)

Marv D 02-07-2012 06:07 PM

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

Steve, check that the retro hydraulic rollers that you have fit the SHP block. The solid rollers have to be the tall, 'light weight cut away' to clear. I don't remember exactly why at the moment, and hydraulics being taller may not have the issue. but check it out before you get too long into the lifters you have and can't exchange them.
