left hand or right hand fuel tank brackets?
Was wondeing if there is a difference in brackets for left or right fuel tanks?
I have three sets of brackets that I have located in my collection of stuff, some from trucks I took apart and some from bought projects, but they all seem to be similar pairs. Seems the front to back on the tank seem to be different, or am I mixing up parts, as I have one about two inches longer then the other, but I figured the brackets from the front to the back on the same tank are different. Anyone know for sure???? Thanks, |

I forget what the whole process was, but I've made LH into RH and then back into LH again, for 12 and 15 gallon tanks. All the holes for the different tank sizes and positions should be in the frame.

Yep, Their the same. I swapped mine from right to left when I replaced beds, The short bracket goes toward the front of the truck and the long to the rear....

Re: left hand or right hand fuel tank brackets?
There is a difference in the brackets. The rear ones are the same, but the bolt pattern on the front ones are a mirror image of each other. They will still work because GM stamped holes for all applications. The welded nuts are what make them different. I have sold a hundred of these on the parts board. Another difference is that the later brackets had provisions to mount the plastic tank protector. Those protectors actually held in the road debris which rubbed the tanks raw until they leaked.

Thanks for the replies.
Forgot to ask what you are using for protection between the straps and the tank? All the old material is shot, and the new straps I bought don't come with anything. |
Re: left hand or right hand fuel tank brackets?
I installed plain old roofing tar paper between the strap and the tank~works great!

Bicycle inner tube works well also.

Re: left hand or right hand fuel tank brackets?
I used an old inner tube cut down to the width of the strap

Re: left hand or right hand fuel tank brackets?
Roofing felt is the closest match to the original stuff that I've seen. The best part is that it's cheap. I of course didn't have any laying around & had to buy a $15 roll of it at Lowe's...cost was around $15. I figure I could insulate a couple thousand more gas tanks with the remainder. Literally.

Re: left hand or right hand fuel tank brackets?
I go to heavy truck parts supply and get the rubber material used on big trucks saddle tanks. Almost the same size straps. Looks really good too and lasts longer than the original.
