Hub/Rotors
 

Hello

I'm looking for some help/advise. I'm trying to remove the front hub/rotors off my 84 4X4 but I don't have the correct special socket for the job. I went to the local parts store and they did have a socket that looked like it might work but the sales guy was not sure if it was the right size or not and neither am I. What they had was a 40mm socket with 4 prongs, is this correct? If this is not the correct tool what size is it and do I need to go to a dealer to find it or should I be able to find something off the shelf?

Secondly if any of you would offer some advice on replacing the front hubs such as torque setting/ tips and trick or any unforeseen problem I might run into that would be great. This is my first attempt at messing around with hubs and bearing so any help would be appreciated.

I went to Advance Auto parts and rented the whole set, 79.95 you get the hole 79.95 back, if you buy the brake rotors from them. It wasn't 40mm, It was like 1 15/16 4 prong.
Not a metric.

I'd hit up another parts store, most of those special sockets say what vehicles they fit, (mine fits fords and some dodges aswell) Ive got the socket for front hubs and and one for the full floating rears, the ID for my front hub socket was 2" and 3/16ths i just checked them both but neither has any actual sizing on it.

I also don't know the exact size, but am guessing it's not a metric. What i do know is, that 4-prong socket will fit in there very snug, please take care to get it just right. I would not think that it would be something that you would need to get at a dealer, but your availability in canada may be different than mine. My local parts store has them on the shelf, but I was lucky enough to have a friend that owned one already, I didn't see the need to purchase, since I don't see this as a job that the average owner is going to get into that often.

I utilized a Haynes manual when we re-built my front axle in december. Don't recall much as far as torque settings, but there were a couple instances when we did use the torque wrench. Most of the inner workings of the hub itself are not required to be that tight. In my case, we had removed axle shafts as well, not sure how deep into the front end you are planning on going with your project.

At this point I'm just trying to get the rotors off to see if they can be re-machined, if they can be. One of the rotors has grooves in it at least a sixteenth deep so I might have to replace them for new ones which brings me to my second problem.

My truck has seen many owners and I believe its been molested to death over its lifetime. When I check the VIN numbers it comes up as a 2wd but what I have is a 4X4 so I'm assuming the body was swapped out from the original body that probable rusted away long ago. The problem I have now is to figure out what year and what type of front end I have on the truck so I can find the correct parts, right now I'm only guessing.

Your grille is an 83-84, which is correct. Looks like everything should work just fine.
