71-72 throttle cable help
1 Attachment(s)
Could one of you 4x4 guys measure your stock cable for me....I need the length from the firewall to where it fits in the carb bracket. I have a stock one from a small block 2wd and it's a little too long for my big block setup. Would like to know if a 4x4 cable would work better.
Thanks |
Re: 71-72 throttle cable help
Reno my 71 4x4 had the same problem, what I did was bend the gas pedal arm to take out the extra slack, that way I could open the 4 barrel up wfo. I am assuming that is your problem also you cant open the carb wide open because of the extra slack ??? Coop

Re: 71-72 throttle cable help
Hey Coop, no slack, acually works good, the sleeve is just too long between the firewall and the bracket, maybe 1/2" to take the tension off the cable. Gonna have to modify this one.
BTW I will be sporting the shroud you sent me when I roll this thing out. Thanks Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: 71-72 throttle cable help
Cant help on lengths but I set my sbc against the firewall and had the same issue. You also have ocd. jk. Best fix is to remove the cable cut off the pedal end of cable and pull cable all the way out. Then pull the plastic tube really hard out of the end that attaches to firewall. Cut the tube to desired length and reinstall it in the firewall end. Send the to long cable back through, install it to the truck then cut the cable to length at the pedal. You can use hardware store cable collets to crimp on the pedal end for stop. Hope that helps and probably left stuff out. turns out real nice and you can make sure you can ensure wot.

Re: 71-72 throttle cable help
Ok so you are wanting to take the "slack" out between the firewall and the throttle bracket. is that just for looks or is it causing a problem?

Re: 71-72 throttle cable help
Are reproduction cables for our trucks offered anywhere? Sorry if my question is sort of a hijack of your O.P. John

Re: 71-72 throttle cable help
Do not know if this will help but I sold both of the throttle cables off my 74 donor trucks to guys that used them in rods. bolts to the firewall from the cab side, small hole for cable pull action. 74- 80 something will be the same. You should be able to lengthen or shorten the cable using a swag type end terminal, google to see the various applications. I have used them to modify e brake cables. There are fancy tools you can buy to compress them, but I use a 4# hammer and have not had any failures....
