Custom ignition setup
Has anyone ever set up a custom set of switches to do what the normal ignition does? For example, have a series of 2-4 switches to turn on sort of the way some race cars do and then a momentary switch for engaging the starter.
Not sold that I want to do this, but trying to mull over what wires would need to be connected to get the desired effect. I have been playing with the ignition switch lately and know there are 6 connections that are on the back of there. Thanks in advance! You guys have helped in so many ways! I'll throw some pics up soon of what I have done up till now on the learning truck :) |

It's fairly simple to do:
You will need to Source a starter button, make sure its able to handle the amps going to be passed through it. The "Starter" buttons are pretty beefy, so you may want to opt for a Late model start button and a relay setup. Wire the button to the small starter wire. You will need toggles for Ignition, Acc., and Fuel pump if your running an electric unit. You will want to hook the Accessory switch to a buss bar to feed your lights, radio, fan, ect.. This will prevent you from having 5 feeds off the toggle. Ignition switch will be wired to the power wire on the distributer. Once everything powers up from switches, you start the truck by powering up fuel circuit, power up Ignition, and press the start button. I find that spinning the motor over and then turning the ignition on will make the engine fire quicker with less opportunity for the engine to snap back and flood. Hope this helps, I run the ignition for my street/strip car this way, but still use the key to power up the switches to keep my car MINE! |

If you do a little research, I would bet you could find a late model Start button that will fit in the factory Ign. hole if you choose to go completely keyless! I would mount your toggle switches on the bottom of the dash where it rolls under. There is a nice flat surface and they will be convenient , but not ugly!

I've been toying around with something like this on my CJ5, to replace the butchered wiring job by the PO...I'd love to see pics if anybody has.

You will want to be careful that you don't over amperage your toggle switch(es). You may want to have the main one activate a large relay so you don't have 50 amps going through a 15amp toggle.

I will be doing something similar but with a twist... name going going competely keyless (entry and ignition) with just one button. Here's a link to the kit.

Did mine with a rocker for the 12 coil power and a momentary switch for the starter. Just like NASCAR. Dead mans switch before the coil switch. Works like a charm!! I will look for pics for u.

If you search a little you can find some Nascar teams sell off items like this. They will be used but will be very good quality. I purchased some AN fittings once.

Chiefcfd that is a very good idea. I have a cousin that helps with a dirt track team and I bet he may have some spare parts or at least have access to a good picture of what they are using!

I had mine running like this temporarily after my engine swap. After I took it to someone working on some of the wiring gremlins, it came home with a relay and things running from the key again. P.O. was not good to the wiring. Just don't skimp on the toggles and momentary switch like previously mentioned and it's pretty simple. I had my switches inside the glovebox door so they flipped down with the door.
