Wrapping headers
 

Looks like I'm in need of wrapping the headers since they appear to be making it too hot for the starter. Anyone have particular brands to avoid?

Wrapping headers on a drag car/truck that only runs for short duration is ok but on a daily driver...don't know about that. I have heard not so great things about what it can do to your headers over time. It will hold moisture as well as heat...not good. Have you installed a heat shield?

You very right, wrap is bad news on a DD it will rust out quickly. it is best to go with a Permanent magnet starter I think pt# 6449 Oem style, make sure you get the bolts for it as they are shorter. Set up for staggerd 168 tooth. It is smaller lighter and much more powerful.

heat shields, ceramic headers,and mini-starters are all things to help the problem

wraps rust out headers in everyday drivin and are quite ugly

Just put a heat shield on your starter like RexDodge mentioned, I have one and mine works.

I have a cover on the starter. I never heard of the wraps rusting out headers. Good to know. I need to take the header off to assess the starter wrap and double check the wiring. Thanks for the heads up guys.

is somthing that gets that hot going to hold moisture and used every day. I would think it would keep dry used every day

I have seen wrapped headers on a dd, that were unwrapped after 2 years, and the tubes had pretty much turned to dust. It is the extreme heat cycles that kill the tubes. Just like the single wall stove pipe, on a wood burning stove.

I had the same problem. I went with a mini starter and then wraped it with a heat blanket that I bought at the parts store. Been at least 2 years now and NO problems what so ever

I have one of those blankets around the starter right now. Doesn't mean it is covering it properly right now though.

You can also run a remote solenoid up on the inner fender too.

All the major header manufactures void the warranty of wrapped headers.

Check this starter out, might solve all your problems. We all run them around here. Napa # 246-5110.

I wrapped a set of steel powdercoated Hedman headers on my Blazer and it destroyed the headers. Not from rust, but from not letting the headers dissipate the heat. The result is exteremely brittle steel. I ended up blowing out a hole in my number 6 tube, so I removed all of the wrap to see what was going on. The steel was so brittle that I could hit it with a hammer and break off pieces around the hole.

Go with a remote solenoid and never look back.

Is a remote solenoid something I can make out of the original or something I will have to buy seperately? I only ask since the starter is pretty new. I used a new solenoid off the starter I had before on my old cub cadet. Yup I'm a little bit redneck:lol:
