Help identify 4 spd shifter

Got this chrome shfiter from a 72 C20 but doesn't match the ones in my 2 trucks. They are painted and have 2 bends where this has only one. Could this be newer?

Thanks,

Bob

From what I understand the single bend SM465 shifter like in your pics is the 4x4 version, while the double bend shifter is for 2x4 trucks.

FWIW, I think the chrome versions are harder to find (especially in good condition), so you might have a treasure on your hands!

I'm sure others will chime in to correct me if I'm wrong.

You're wrong, those things are a dime a dozen. You should probably just send it over to me and I'll throw it out for you! LOL

All kidding aside, any single bend shifter like that is from a 4x4 in years 67-72 only. The chrome ones were only available in higher trim levels, Cheyenne and cheyenne super. If you don't need it, I would do some research on how much it's worth and offer it for sale on the parts board. It's a pretty rare item that someone might really be looking for. But that part is up to you!

Also, many of the 73-87 ones were chrome, but they all had two bends in them.

Thanks guys. I had no idea it might be rare/valuable. Saw it just sitting on the seat of that truck in a junkyard and brought it home. :D

The shifters are interchangable so they tend to get mixed up as owners swap transmissions, trucks, etc.

My C10 came with a single bend shifter and I swapped it back out for the "correct" double bend version. Just like most things on these trucks, it's all about personal preference and making what you have on hand work.

Interesting.. I'm very sure my truck came with the sm420. The SPID says 4-speed (could be 465 I guess?), but it didn't appear that my shifter or transmission had ever been swapped.
odog says it looks like the shifter on his sm420.
Can anyone else help out?

How many PTO covers does your transmission have? The SM465 should have two, the SM420 would only have one. Also, reverse on the SM420 is to the left and down where the SM465 reverse is to the right and down.

On 6's and 4wd's the trans is mounted further rearward in the chassis. I think all 6's and 4wd's came with the single bend shift lever because of no need to clear the dash panel. Not sure about vaiations between 465 and 420's.

Re: Help identify 4 spd shifter

Mine has 1 PTO cover and my pattern's left and down. I just meant that the SPID, from what I can tell, doesn't specify between the two. Mine did originally have the 292 L6 so that might make more sense to have the 420 and single bend shifter from the factory on a 2wd 1/2 ton truck. And I didn't think this was that uncommon... I did love how the bell housing from '67 fit perfectly with my '93 350 block!

New Process 435's have a shift lever with only one bend. The 435's were only used in 4X2's, and reverse is to the right and down.

My 420 is behind a factory 327, reverse is to the left and down, it messes with my wife whenver she gets in it.
