Lock cylinder removal (without key)??
 

Hey all,

Is there a way to remove the lock cylinder in the ignition without the key? I know how to remove it with the key, but do I need a locksmith to do it without the key?

Take a sawzall from behind and cut it off.

1/4" drillbit into the lock from the front - its worked for me a few times.

I would have to agree with the other fellas. Get a new or used switch with a key and drill out the old one. I'd probably start with a 3/8 bit. :)

Thanks guys. I sent out the VIN to GM's vintage division. Might be able to get the key code from them, we'll see. If not we'll drill the lock and replace it with a new barrel.

My brother got one out of a '67 for me using a couple small pics and a straight pin; I couldn't have sat there that long!

Truck is too old to do that.

The first thing I would do is to pull the passengers door lock out and see if there is a code number stamped into it. If there is take it to a locksmith and have him cut you a key. If the locks are all original the key will fit the ignition. If you don't have a locksmith close PM me the code number and I will cut you a key and send it to you for 8 bucks. If there is no code number on it, the door lock can still be disassembled and de-coded to cut a key. The destructive methods would be a last resort for me.

He got really lucky then. The GM sidebar lock cylinders (used from 1935 to present) are almost impossible to pick, even by very experienced locksmiths. I have been a locksmith since 1977 specializing in automobiles and motorcycles and I can count on one hand the number of GM sidebar locks I have been able to pick, unless they are totally worn out....

or to get the assembly out (of truck), i have had to pop the chrome cover off before. its just crimped on around the edge. thats all that holds the bezel to the key cylinder.. after that gets poped off its all easy to disasemble, cept the lock cylinder is still in it.. but easyer to work on

I have done that too but it depends on the lock cylinder it has in it. For some reason the diameter of the face of the cylinder is larger on some of them and that doesn't work.

I have the same issue with my truck Lockdoc, but I don't have the door locks that came out of it. Is there a number on the ignition cylinder itself?

Even if the passenger side has no code. Take it to a locksmith. I just had this issue. I had four new keys made. $21. Great deal without stress or damage. That is if it is keyed alike.

Yes, most of them have a code number on them. Problem is if you don't have a key it is almost impossible to get them out without destroying them.

I figured instead of starting a new thread I'd add post in this one. How do you remove the lock cylinder if you have the key? I just bought a new ignition and lock cylinder and put them together prematurely only to find out you have to put it in the dash and lock it down before you put the lock cylinder in.:waah:

Use a large paper clip. Follow LockDoc's advice in post #3 of this thread.
