Intermediate Shaft?

My 67 Shortie has a straight column (no tilt). Since it does not work well (no park). I asked around for a tilt and people tell me I need an intermediate shaft. Is this true? Or are people just trying to get another $50 for me?

Could I use an intermediate shaft from a newer truck? Possible a cheap junk yard part? Does it matter that I do not have power steering with a tilt column?

Please post what you feel like answering. I guess 5 years ago when I bought my truck I should have spend more money on a truck with a V-8, power steering/brakes, and paint. But I am having soo much fun trying to piece my truck together.

Jay.

67/68 columns used a single long shaft that runs from steering wheel to steering box. In 69 they went to a shorter shaft and an "intermediate shaft". You will need one for a later year column be it tilt or not, but $50 is way too high IMO.

PS or manual, it's the same shaft. I doubt later years will work

Thanks for the info. Maybe I will keep looking around. Junkyards here are picked clean for any good parts.

The tilt columns are splined where as the older columns had what they call a double D with a thru bolt. Just put a tilt in my 68 and went thru the same prob.
