steering wheel issue
so on a recent truck i have obtained (1969 stepper) i found that if you pull up on the steering wheel it will easily come up about an inch or 2. i have the top of the steering column torn apart right now since i had to fix the turn signal switch as well. the PO really hodge podged this one together :dohh:. where should i check/tighten to solve the steering wheel pulling up? thanks for any insight.

Re: steering wheel issue
do you mean pull it towards you ? if so i think your problem may be at the bottom where the steering shaft hooks to it. there should be a spring between the the shaft and the column to keep tension .

Re: steering wheel issue
yes, basically pulling the shaft out of the column. i know there is a spring there, but ill check it out, maybe it wasn't set right.

Re: steering wheel issue
whats it doing under the hood down by the rag joint.?
|
Re: steering wheel issue
rag joint is solid it appears to be taking the slack from the coupler where the upper and lower shaft meet. the little rubber sock deal just curls back it looks like

Re: steering wheel issue
sometimes after a colapse as in a front end mishap they do that, could be spring has rusted away

Re: steering wheel issue
Should be a rotating collar at the bottom of the column outside the firewall that is used to adjust the bearing/shaft end play.
