Recently stumbled upon a thread talking about swapping an XJ steering shaft onto a C10. This takes out the rag joint and replaces it with u-joints which is supposed to help with steering slop. Good news about this is I have a parts 87 Jeep Cherokee left over from another 87 project with my dad that I can simply pull off for free ;). My only question is will this work with the end fitting on a 77 gearbox? Of the 6 or 7 threads on here there seems to be a consensus that the ends changed somewhere between 77-79 and that the newer style will not work with the XJ shaft, but the end fittings can be changed (not sure on that, saw a post about it though). Does anyone know if it will work on a stock 77 gearbox? if not how easily can the gearbox ends be changed?

My truck is a 77 but I am using a 79 steering box(no reason in particular, this is just what I ended up with) It already has a flat spot on the splines that matches up to the Cherokee shaft. Your issues is going to be the 77 steering column unless yours has been switched out. The mating surface is a different size than a cherokee one. I am currently looking for a 78-83 steering column for mine. I guess if you wanted to weld the piece off your intermediate shaft onto the Cherokee one you wouldn't have to worry about it though.

Thanks for the reply. Hmm, link gives me a 404 error but it is probably one of them that I saw. Thanks for clearing it up about the column though, I do have a column out of a 79 I might can use. I never got around to swapping it in because since it has cruise I figured the wiring wouldn't match. Guess I need to look more into it.

Cruise is no big deal to remove as it is just one screw to switch out the cruise control arm to the regular one. Link works now

Would the harness that hooks to the wiring that goes to the fuse box still work?

If it is a 79 column the cruise shouldn't have anything to do with the main turn signal wiring on the column so it won't effect the fuse box

Yeah it's a 79. You have no idea how much I am kicking myself in the butt right now. I bought it at a swap meet about a year ago because it's a tilt (and mine isn't) but I never got around to installing it because I didn't want to mess with the cruise wiring. Guess I should have done some more research....I guess I'll swap the 79 in and then pull the steering shaft off the parts jeep. Hopefully my steering will improve a lot. My steering is pretty mushy as it is.
