To coil or to spindle, that is the question?

Ok I have the money for my 2/4 drop and was wondering if I should go with 2 in coils or 2 in spindles for the front and why one makes since more than the other?:metal::metal::metal:

You could just cut a coil out an save some dough towards spindles down the road
I plan on doing both coils and spindles

IMO spindles is always a good one to do first. It doesn't mess with any of the suspension geometry. You are simply moving the placement of the wheel, everything stays as it should with the geometry of the suspension.

I agree with 71swb, Spindles are best if you have the choice. Then later if you want to go lower (most do) all you have to do is cut a coil or two off the stock springs.....

Re: To coil or to spindle, that is the question?

I am mainly concerned about ride quality. Dont want one to be more rough than the other so Id rather do it right the first way. LOL yes I plan on going lower in the future.

Re: To coil or to spindle, that is the question?

Go with spindles. Best ride quality and keeps the stock geometry. If you plan on going lower in the future, go with 2.5" spindles. The extra half inch will make a big difference in ride quality when buying drop springs in the future.

You'll be much happier with dropped spindles.

lol .. I wish! But I will deffinately buy the spindles over the sprigs that makes seanse. What does the big difference form the .05 inch difference I dont understand that one?

Before we jump in on spindles what wheels are you running? Don't buy drop springs. Those suckers bounce and the springs attenuate horribly and not even good shocks help. If you plan on going very low up front like a 6 inch drop find some used 3/4 ton springs at a wrecking yard and cut them otherwise cut half ton springs are a good idea as well for 5 inch drops.

Btw 2-4 drops don't look good IMO since the front always seams to look taller than the rear. I would suggest a 3in drop up front

reminder, going with aether springs or spindles a alignment will be needed after the instal.

A half inch lower doesn't seem that much on paper but does make a difference on how much spring you hafta cut in the end to get as low as you want. The less spring you hafta cut the better the ride. I'm sure there is some type of scientific explanation but the more spring you cut, the more you mess up the stock geometry and you also get more of a bounce. The above people are right. Drop springs tend to be a bit more stiff and bouncy. Also, if you like wheel size options, the 2.5 drop spindles let you still run 15" wheels. 3" drop spindles require some grinding to clear the wheels unless you run a bigger wheel diameter.

You can start with bagging the front for a relative cheap price, then tax time do your rear

Re: To coil or to spindle, that is the question?

From my experience, neither my 79 nor my friends 86 needed an alignment after 2.5 drop spindles on mine or his 3" spindles. Only the springs will cause an alignment issue and you will have to shim the upper a arm out where it connects to the frame.

I'm finding that drop springs are actually soft and mushy which causes the bounce. Kinda like an old Cadillac. Great if rolling low and slow is your style lol
