I have a 86 the first year of the tbi I had me trans 700r4 installed by Aamco. They had problems with getting the dent cable adjusted on the TBI they was asking me to change to a carb I refused I don't think it's shifting right wonder if anyone no and thing that's diffrent about putting this cable on a tbi over a carb the only thing I no now that should b simple is the throttle needs to be all the way open and the cable needs to be tight

Might be time to switch shops, should be no reason anyone can't properly adjust detent cable on a 700r4 regardless if its a carb or tbi

Re: 1986 and up tbi 700r4 dent cable installation
First tell us the shift points. Does the cable bind anyway? Did they install a new cable with the 700R4? Is cable end adjustable? Detent cable is for a 350TH, TV cable for 700R4.

Re: 1986 and up tbi 700r4 dent cable installation
AAMCO is the last place I would trust with a transmission job (or anything for that matter) as over the years my family members had nothing but bad rebuild jobs or incorrectly installed transmission. Learned from their mistakes
If you have original throttle bracket it should be attached to the intake and intake manifold to head bolts. It is critical to get 700R4 TV cable adjusted correctly. The most common problem is incorrect replacement cable. TV Cable adjustment procedure can be found here: http://news.compperformance.com/Inst...ble_adjust.pdf I had reasonable results using a universal replacement cable from TECKPAK - which can be found locally or on Ebay. Since your truck was originally was equipped with TBI Aamco has no business telling you to switch to a carb. It is wrong for many reasons. A word of advise - leave that shop as quickly as possible. //RF |

86 should not have TBI.

Re: 1986 and up tbi 700r4 dent cable installation
It can if the original engine was a V6.

Re: 1986 and up tbi 700r4 dent cable installation
You sure? It always stuck in my head 87 was the first year for the trucks to have TBI no matter the engine size. Not doubting you on it just don't recall that.

Re: 1986 and up tbi 700r4 dent cable installation
I went threw this with Keith,a quote from him to me
To answer your earlier question: no TBIs on fullsize trucks in '85. We've had this discussion before and I can answer with confidence, because I 've had conversation with the GM Powertrain guys who did the calibrations for these TBI engines. They have said no TBIs until 1987 model year. besides that I'd change shops TBI is much better to run then carb |
Re: 1986 and up tbi 700r4 dent cable installation
Is why I'm fairly confident in my saying there was no TBI offered in full size trucks until 87. I know some GM cars and perhaps the S series had TBI/FI before 87, but not the full size trucks/SUV's.

Re: 1986 and up tbi 700r4 dent cable installation
I thought the v-6's were still carbed in 87.
I agree no tbi on trucks before 87. |

GM history on V6.
Chevrolet kicked off a 75th anniversary celebration in 1986. By year’s end, the company would make 1,174,217 trucks. New was a high-tech instrument cluster. The Vortec V6 had electronic fuel-injection and swirl-port heads for a nine percent power boost. It was Chevy’s most powerful base truck engine ever http://www.pickuptrucks.com/html/sto...art2page1.html |
Re: 1986 and up tbi 700r4 dent cable installation

Re: 1986 and up tbi 700r4 dent cable installation
TBI did start coming out in full size trucks in 1986. The trucks were "1987" models though and not 86 year trucks. Just like the new body style 88 model trucks came out in 1987... They were still 1988 model trucks despite it being early 1987 still.
1987 year model trucks was when TBI was introduced to the full sizes. |
