Por or ?
 

I am almost ready to paint my frame and am trying to decide what coating to use. Sand blasting is really not an option. The plan is phosphoric acid.followed by Por15, rust bullet or?


I have read a lot of bad things about por15 lately but some people are never happy.:lol:

I used Rustoleum CombiColor (7300) on my rearend, brackets and other things that attach to the frame. Whenever I get to the frame, I'll be using that as well for it ...

POR 15 stands for "paint over rust". it will look great for a little while, but it will chalk. It must be top coated "in the window", wait to long and it won't stick.

Check out zero rust, does just as good of job as POR 15, without all the bad toxic stuff. I have used it for years. State and county and city gov. like it because you just clean and paint. The next best thing is epoxy. Check out there web site.

POR 15 worked good for me, I used regular POR 15 then satin Chassis coat. I brushed it on and it smoothed out nicely. follow their instructions and use only their products and you will be happy. Also they were helpful and nice when I called before I had decided to order

I am a novice on body work, but I always trusted Permatex.
This is a thin liquid aerosol. Turns rust to a dark, hard surface.
I am going to spray it inside my doors to slow down the inevitable.:lol:

I have used this with good results. it used to be called EXTEND. it also comrs in a brush on liquid.

i used por on my frame with no top coat, still black but sees no uv under the body :D
i also use zero rust, seems equal in use, cheaper to buy

I used the POR 15 system on places where I couldn't get all the rust off (not to many). Then epoxy single stage primer and 3 coasts Nason Chassis Black single stage. Dries to a nice finish.

I also used Eastwood frame paint and seems to be very durable considering it is an aerosol spray. It did come out a lot better than I expected, but the prep is very important. I spent a lot of time wire wheeling the frame to get it to bare metal in as many places as possible. The better the surface is prepped for paint, the better the results and durability due to better adhesion.

True, I sand blasted my whole frame. I had to make some ground connection and I had to get a wire wheel on the angle grinder to take some off to make a good ground.

Man o man, the more I look into POR, the more confused I get. The website only says to "wire brush loose rust and scale." I can't find a clear definition of scale. Some sources say wire brush down to bare steel, others say POR won't work on bare steel. Can't seem to find any clear reference as to how much rust is acceptable.

Sorry for the hijack, just venting...

I've heard good things about Hammerite paint. I think it costs about the same but you don't need to top coat it like por15.

I used por15 on my frame, firewall, inner fenders. Worked good for me. Sandblasted frame, sanded firewall with 60-80 grit and just knocked off the flakes on inner fenders and sprayed. Everything is holding up well. Stuff is tough I was hitting something in with a hammer and missed thought for sure paint was going to be messed up but couldn't even see hammer mark.

POR 15 is tough paint but at 5X the price of Rustoleum I'm not sure it's worth the extra cost.

I've had aquart of this for about a year in my garage (hoping its still good). But I DIDN'T buy the prep stuff. How did you prep? Any in-process photos?

I planned on just wire wheeling down to solid metal and wiping with acetone before painting. Good enough? Has yours stayed glossy like that?

After some research I decided to give rust bullet a shot. It dosen't need a top coat but there is only one color metellic silver. I may not topcoat it depends on how it comes out.

Cost aside - if sandblasting is the choice of prep, would powdercoating not provide a more durable, smooth finish than paint (POR, Eastwood, etc.)? I've got a local connection for the blasting and coating, but don't want to go that direction if it won't provide a better outcome. Thanks, Jim

Powdercoating is great but not everyone is doing a frame off restoration.

Powder coating is cool if thats what you want to do. It looks great and is durable. The only reason I don't do it to frames is because I'm known to make changes and its so easy grind paint off make my changes and repaint.

As for me I prefer to get all the rust removed and use epoxy primer and single stage black on my frames. Its durable and easy to touch up. I just don't believe in painting over rust. I'm not saying those products don't work, I just can't bring myself to do it.lol
