Manual tranny swap

Finally got around to dropping in my Muncie tranny after two years of talking about it. To get the hole in the tranny mount to line up with the hole in the crossmember, I had to disconnect the motor mounts from the frame and move them back. At lest the tranny is in and the driveshaft is hooked up. Anyone run into this problem before? May need to drill new holes in the frame and engine crossmember to get everything buttoned down.

Thanks,

Mike

Not that there is a wrong way, if youre building it custom to your liking. Typically though, you leave the engine placement the same, and move the transmission crossmember, then shorten/lengthen the driveshaft.

Moving your motor rearward isnt a bad thing, if everything clears, you just took the less traveled route.

There are usually different holes in the frame for different transmission options.

There are never stupid questions. I had an Olds 260/TH200 combo in there before

Should be exactly 1/4" bell housing to mount difference between the TH200 (20 1/8") and the TH350 (20 3/8"). This is what I was off. My truck was originally a 6 banger with a TH350

Pirate, have you drilled your front crossmember already? If you only have 1/4 inch difference, that isnt going to put much distance between your old and new motor mount holes. I'd be alittle concerned with swiss cheesing it up too much.

Probably will be fine, Im just anal like that.

Also, its cool you finally got it installed. Granted I just joined, but awhile back I was searching about putting a muincie in mine, and came across your older threads.

Haven't drilled jack yet Seventy. Just trying to get some ideas. I know it is an easy fix. The bed is coming off soon so, I may just on bolt the cab and raise to to get some of the tension off the frame and square up the crossmember. Either that or replace it..........

Usually folk bolt the crossmember to transmission and drill holes in the frame to bolt it in its new spot. Make sure the dist cap is good for clearance and it shouldn't matter. How much trouble was it installing the linkage and pedals? Love the vintage valve covers btw.

I love that old stuff!! The newest thing on that motor are a few gaskets and the Hays clutch parts. The flywheel and tranny are vintage 1968, while the motor is an 81' 4 bolt main. I haven' t swapped the pedals or column out yet but, everything is in my garage. I will end up moving the crossmember forward the required amount or replacing it entirely.

I could give you dimensions but your set up maybe different. Easier thing to do would be laying some tape down the center of the tunnel centered on the hole in your crossmember. Verify this with he center of your tranny and tranny mount. My shifter had about a 2 1/4" offset from the center point. I cut my floor 4 times and still need to trim it a little more to clear in 2nd and 4th gears. I can get some measurements for you on Thursday before I head to my folks for dinner. I am going to measure it for you from inside of the cab. Your cut out will nearly be all he way back where he hump starts to rise and about 1" from where it starts to dip to the driver's side floor. You should be alright if you can cut something about 2 1/2" to 3" square. Maybe swb85 will chime in. He has been my go to guy on this swap
