Fixing a manual window..
On my 82 GMC Sierra the driver side window doesn't roll up and down smoothly. So, I would like to try to get to the track or whatever you call that on manual windows? and see If I can fix it.
If I take the door panel off will it be right there, or is there something else that needs to be taken off? Thanks guys. |
Re: Fixing a manual window..
iirc, there are a couple of screws in the panel, and removal of the clip holding the window crank (and messing with the push pins holding the panel tight to the door)
You should have access to the window mechanism. |
Re: Fixing a manual window..
Thanks. I went out and checked it today, the driver side window crank has been put on it some kind of a weird way. I'm going to go ahead and get a new crank and clips. Wheres a good place to get these?

Re: Fixing a manual window..
New clips should be at any parts store they might even have handles if not just make a trip to your local junk yard

Re: Fixing a manual window..
When you have the door panel off you will find sheet metal on the inside of the door. You can then spray WD40 on the window regulator. This may help it roll up and down better. There are many thing that could cause the problem. I had a window that was hard to role up and down. It turned out that the glass was to thick. Some trucks have thicker glass then others. I discovered this by accident. I got a thinner one at the yard and it works great now.

Re: Fixing a manual window..
Thanks guys, on my driver side window crank I don't see any clips. It almost looks like someone wired the crank on there somehow, I'm not sure if I need to buy new clips and washers or what.

Re: Fixing a manual window..
yes the older glass is thicker
is the handle plastic ,might be stripped a trick showed here is to drag a clean rag behind the crank catching the C clip |

Re: Fixing a manual window..
Thanks guys for the help. As of today, the driver side window is stuck rolled all the way up. I didn't want put a whole lot of force in to seeing if it would come back down. I'm going to get one of those tools like above and remove the crank and door panel and see whats going on. Should I be able to pick up one of those window crank removal tools at a NAPA?

Re: Fixing a manual window..
You used to be able to, haven't shopped for one lately. They should also sell like a 5 pack of clips for the window crank for a couple bucks. Couple bucks well spent if the old clip goes "zing".

Re: Fixing a manual window..
Thanks. I'm also missing the washer on the driver side crank. Do they just need one thin rubber washer?

Re: Fixing a manual window..
I have decided I need a window regulator. I ordered one, how hard is it to install a manual window regulator on these trucks? Can I do it with just basic hand tools?

Patience will be the best tool.

Re: Fixing a manual window..
Well, I tried to take out the old regulator yesterday, couldn't get it.
Do you have to remove the vent window on this body style? I can't get the regulator out, because the shaft that the window crank goes on doesn't have enough room to be pushed back, and slid out. It hits a metal bar, that seems to be attached to the vent window. |
