1987 Chevy 350 Loss of Power On Acceleration

My 1987 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup has a lack of power on acceleration and both exhaust manifolds turn cherry red. Exhaust manifolds will also turn red (although not as hot) if truck is just sitting running in the yard. This truck currently has no catalytic converter. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

Sounds very lean. Anything done to the engine performance wise? What's the setup?

I was getting a code 42 on this truck so replaced the white EST wire going to ignition module. This is a stock 350 throttle body. Thanks for replying.

Code 42 also could mean that you have set EST connector open. If this is the case timing is not control by ECM and is fixed at what ever base timing was set - usually 0 deg. This would explain poor running engine. Set EST plug is a single wire plug usually found next to brake booster and has beige-white stripe wire. Make sure that at idle your timing is around 18 deg +/-3 deg bouncing as this would indicate that ECM is adjusting timing.

Do you have catalytic converters? They could be getting plugged.
