Help with bumper bolts?
 

I'm trying to change the front bumper on my 82, and the bolts have these chrome button looking things on top of them. How do you get the bolts out of these bumpers?

They are a carriage style bolt with the square shoulder that sits in a square hole, take care in removing them and always keep the head end against the bumper to keep them from spinning.

When you remove the nut from the back the bolt just pulls out.

Depending on the condition of the hardware, you might have to cut them off and get new bolts. Thats what I had to do on my 89. Fortunately, LMC has the stainless bolt kit to replace the factory bolts. If the bolts aren't rusted to the nuts, then make sure you keep the head of the carriage bolts against the bumper or they will just spin.

Most of the ones I've taken off break. But no big deal though. They're basically just carriage bolts anyway.

there is a nut on tha backside of tha bumper...slide under there & look & it will be clear how it comes off

I definitely suggest using some WD40, fairly easy to spin the carriage bolt through the bumper material if its locked up.

if their heavily rusted or have damaged threads, i've found it easier to unbolt the bumper brackets & then cut off the bolts to avoid damaging them square holes

slow but,you can drill them ,if it's more important not to damage the bumper

In my experience you have one chance to take those carriage bolts off without striping that square shoulder of the carriage bolt or rounding the square hole of the bumper.

I quickly heat the nut. With a helper putting pressure on the head of the carriage bolt with what ever is handy ie: hammer head or a 2x4
I gently back the nut off.

If it does spin? Your left to have to burn them off

Try some Rust Buster and let it sit then More and work the nut slowly back and forth as you undo the bolt ..

Break them. Buy new ones.
I recommend tightening them to death if they start giving you trouble on the way out. Don't wanna strip those holes

Thanks guys for the info. I don't have any tools to cut them with, but I'll probably get one of the guys that does some other work on the truck for me to get them out.

Can you get the replacement bolts at an auto parts store?

You can get a Bumper Bolt kit that has the Carriage Bolt with the cap and the lock washers and nuts for 19.95 from LMC Trucks .

I had to use my grinder to cut an "X" into the rounded face of the bolts then bust them out. New carriage bolts are cheap.

Mine came out without a problem on my 77. Spray some penetrating oil on them and wait a day. Pretty rusty, but came out without a problem.
