Are dust shields required?
 

Well, I guess I'm about as bad as a woman changing her mind but, I decided to go ahead and do disc brakes on the front of my '65 chevy LWB. I went with sloted and cross drilled rotors with wilwood calipers and 2 1/2" drop spindles. I have a question regarding dust shields...do any of ya'll that have done this use dust shields? They were not included in the kit I purchased so, I'm wondering if they are needed. I also purchased new stock upper and lower A-arms because the old ones were damaged. Thanks in advance for any help.

They help in cooling for disc brakes

Yea I like to run em just to keep grease and road crud off the rotors.

All I've ever seen them do is rust, I choose to forgo them.

I think that dust shields can be used on most spindles. That being said I don't think you can use them with CPP Modular spindles.

I'm pretty sure I left them off my 67 Chevelle when I added disc brakes to the front. I thought it looked better at the time. It also kept any small stones from getting trapped against the rotors, a problem I've had from time to time on my CRV. I don't remember the suspension being any dirtier than any other daily driven Chevelle.

Thank you to all for the replys. Went back to POL website and saw where it stated that they would only work with stock GM calipers.


"Our new dust shield-backing plates are exact reproductions of GM original disc brake dust shields found 70's and 80's Chevy and GMC trucks. These items are used when running the single piston D-52 GM caliper with factory and after market drop spindles."


I will try the shields when I put the brakes on to see for myself. If they fit correctly, I'll probably run them. Thanks again for the replys.
