66 cab wiring
I am at a loss.
I am working on a friends 66 Chevy truck and I am told that there are differences between the wiring with idiot lights and gages. The original wiring harness is pretty butchered but may be repairable. However, the truck had idiot lights and I am now installing gages. At this point I do not know what I need. Also, I would love to find an outlet that sells the plug ends so I can replace damaged pieces. All of this is completely different than the GMC stuff I normally work on. Any wiring guru's here that can help?? :5150: |
Re: 66 cab wiring
Im no wiring guru, but I did the conversion in my 63. I used a new wiring harness due to the condition of my OEM harness, but I did research on it before. There are some things that'll change, and some remain the same. The fuel guage is the same. The oil pressure guage will have to be plumbed from the block, and the wires for the sender can be eliminated. The ammeter or voltmeter depending on what you have will have to be wired. And the temp sending unit has to be swapped out and wired. The speedometer is the same as is the turn signals and the cluster bulbs. Tachs had their own wiring harness, so it's completely seperate.

Re: 66 cab wiring
I think the plastic plugs can be ordered from Obsolete Chevy Parts and I believe Truck Shop in CA has them also.

I have the harness that comes off the gage cluster. The oil pressure gage looks pretty straight forward. I was told the main harness that includes the fuse block is different. I will check on the plug ends.. thanks again. :5150: |

The problem is that I have several, maybe close to a dozen different wiring harnesses that have nothing wrong with them other than a few broken connectors. :uhmk: The pins come out of the connectors pretty easy and I have been able to make 3-4 complete wiring harnesses but that left me with a handful that just need to have connectors replaced. :waah: I may have found a source and I will post it if I did. :metal: As for the difference in wiring from idiot lights to gauges, other than the pig tail that plugs into the gauges, I see no difference in the wiring. If I am wrong, I hope someone here will be able to tell me. ;) :5150: |
Re: 66 cab wiring
If you can get your hands on an old Standard catalog- alot of the connector housings are still available thru local parts stores. You'll need to be armed with part numbers as most counter persons may not be familiar with how to look them up.
