modified lca's (crazy?)

im keeping drum in all 4 corners so no drop spindles are availible
im trying to stay away from z'ing my frame till way later

the front is bagged with plates and cups
cups are 1.5" and there is already a little bag rub so i dont want to go lower

i was thinking of chopping the control arm up and cupping it but...
moving the balljoint up 2"
basically z the control arm

does this seem crazy
iv got plenty of fab skill to attempt it but do you think it will mess up the geometry and performance of the suspension???

im thinking that if i do all this it willl get me to lay crossmember( an extra 5")

It can be done as 'old school' guys did it that way once upon a time before drop spindles existed.

It will mess w/the geometry & the a-arm 'pocket' will smack something hard sooner or later & it wont be good when it happens. Why not spindles & discs to improve safety?

Why not just cup the control arm..

I think that keeping 4 wheel drums on a truck is crazy if you ever plan on driving the thing...but I hate drums.
And the fact that if you do that and crash it, your insurance company CAN drop you and sue you for the total amount of all medical and legal damages. It might seem a bit sensationalistic, but they can actually use the modified suspension as reasonable doubt of the condition of the safety and integrity of the vehicle...this is especially true if its licensed and insured as a regular or collector vehicle, without special annotations like "hobbyist, street modified, etc" in which you have additional coverage for special modifications.

Not trying to stop you, but I've seen the unfortunate side of things at times.

Another option is to slice and dice your crossmember or Z the frame as you already mentioned. Also what size wheel and tire are you going to run on it right now? Good luck with your project and lets see some pics:metal:

I will eventually z the frame but its to big if a pain with a daily driver

The tires I have on it right now are 235/75r15
They are really small compared to what was on it
This is aired out in the front right now

yeah mine will lay x member too, with 2600's and 245/40/20's with some room to spare.

I made the cups flush with the bottom of the a arm..

Re: modified lca's (crazy?)

yeah i had to take them out then cut into the fender to clear the tires,

vegadesign 04-20-2013 02:41 AM

Re: modified lca's (crazy?)

That's my only downfall is I don't want to do disk, and there is not drop spindles for drum which is why I was thinking of lifting the lower ball joint
And probably pie cut the upper so the upper joint doesn't bind

I know you all are thinking I'm crazy keeping drum but I'm not worried about stopping power since I don't have the tire to stop me anyways
If you know what your doing drum works great

I left four 20ft skid marks when someone decided to backup without reverse lights, so it stops plenty good for a tank lol

I'm just trying to work with what I have and make a true ratrod
Everything is homemade
I take a lot of pride in my fabrication and I'm sure I can figure something out to lay xmember without major mods

Seriously? Your theory is why worry about being able to stop since my tires are unsafe anyway. I get it that you are not concerned with your own safety, but what about those around you? How cool are you going to be when your "tank" leaves four skid marks over some innocent child that chased a toy out in to the street in front of you? Leaving "four 20ft skid marks" is a perfect example of why you should focus on improving your braking system. Locked up brakes are NOT a sign that your system is working at maximum efficiency.

If your going to post remarks like that, this is probably not the forum for you. We only offer advice to those that are doing everything possible to build projects to be as safe as possible.

Sorry if I came across rude, didn't mean that

My safety an everyone else's safety is fine around me
45mph to a dead stop is quick and 20 ft could have been more

I only drive safe especially is crowded areas like neighborhoods
My truck stops on a dime when braking is controlled

Its cool bro, thats just a touchy subject around here. I see your an auto tech by trade so you already know how important it is to address mechanical issues with safety in mind. I just encourage you to keep the same mentality you must have with customers cars and apply it to your own. :)

Re: modified lca's (crazy?)

For sure bro
Safety is the biggest thing for me
Which is the point of this thread, I had the idea of moving the lower ballpoint up and cupping the control arm and the issue of scrub line

A little bag rub is too much. What ever you decide to do, be safe. Bag failure is not safe.

That's what I'm looking for
What about the angle of the ballpoint
Seems like it would bind early

It's not near as bad as it looks there. And it was $75...
