Help I lowered my 71 Cheyenne 3/5 and need help with shocks

I did a DJM front 3" coil spring drop and a DJM rear flip kit on my 71 Cheyenne. I've mounted shorted shorks on the rear but it still seems to bottom out and ride rougth. I'm sure that other's have done this and I just need a little of help. I seen were some are doing shock relocators etc. but I would rather ask before buying a bunch of crap that doesn't work!

Shock relocators work well and give you a little extra travel. Also helps the shock angle. In the front just use stock length shocks. They won't bottom out.

Call Stan at Early Classics. Be sure to tell him you are a board member and he'll give you a discount.

Also, welcome to the board from TN! Awesome 69 brother! I have built several 69's myself. Real RS/Z car? Is it the one with the 632ci ?? :jdp:

Did you need to do a frame notch with that rear flip kit? I am asking because I'm thinking of doing the flip kit to the rear of my leaf sprung truck.

Re: Help I lowered my 71 Cheyenne 3/5 and need help with shocks

The key for the rear shocks on LEAF spring trucks with a flip kit,... is to try and stand up the rear shocks at a better angle.
There is no bolt on part for this as far as I know.
I have heard of some members re-drilling the upper shock mount and moving the upper shock stud to the new hole.
The other optionis to grind out the upper shock mount rivets and move the entire mount.

If you don't address the shock angle,... the shocks lay too flat, and just pivot on the mounts,... instead of compressing the shock.

I missed the leaf spring part.

Something about a 600+ ci BB in a 69 Camaro pulled me in a different direction I guess. :burnout:

have you taken a tape measure and seen exactly how much range of movement that your shocks have when installed?

subscribed... i am in need of doing something with my shocks on the back of my flip kitted leaf setup also...

random question since we are on leafs. how many would be stock on the rear of one of the half tons? mine has 4 leafs each side, but i can squat the backend just by pushing down with my arms and not even lifting myself off the ground...

With or without shocks installed?

The first thing I did was relocate the shocks.
After a bit of digging a fellow member mentioned drilling out the hole directly behind the stock mounting stud and bolting on a new one.
I used the step bit to drill out the holes and a stock Monroe mounting stud that came with the new shocks.
I had to buy a replacement 5/16” nut because the ones that came with the stud didn’t thread all the way down and lock washers (which I didn’t initially use and lost one of the nuts).
Bolted up the shocks and voila, I had some suspension travel.

Yep, with some old shocks on. I'm sure they are pretty weak also though. And assuming they are original leafs, they have softened up a lot over the years also...
