Notched firewalls

Putting a 540ci in my 66 step, and the valve covers are hitting the firewall.Lets see pics of notched firewalls.I have to use the tall valve covers ,because i run a stud girdle with the 760 lift cam. Seen a few on here before.

Re: Notched firewalls

Only based on seeing/personal preference here but. Can the motor be moved forward enough to not need to tub/notch the firewall? If it can't due to radiator clearance or possibly transmission woes I understand but I personally never cared for the look of any firewall other then stock or smoothed out. The tubbed/notched ones never have that "factory flow".

Hey Rocktonka,
Can you still remove the valve covers?

I cut mine in 3 spots then bent the firewall back and welded in some sheetmetal. Like the other the valve covers barely come off but they do.

Good to see these solutions. I will be notching mine next week. My new roller rockers will only fit under the tall valve covers. I have about a 1/8" clearance to the firewall so notching is my solution.

I notched mine like the above the first time around and just didn't like it.
I then cut out and recessed the center section with a custom made piece.

Re: Notched firewalls

These modifications were done because I moved the motor back, did away with the 'gutter', shaved/filled most of the holes.

Here is a look at the inside of the firewall under the dash.
You will see the floor is different than stock infront of the trans tunnel cover because the cab was also stretched 5".
Second pic shows how much room between header and cab before completion.
