Fuel economy poll

I'm curious. What kind of fuel consumption are all you guys seeing in your 60-66? I think it'd be neat to have a poll. Post your numbers, along with a basic description of the truck and driveline. Should be interesting.

EDIT: Also, note how you calculated the mileage.

get 15 city and 20 hwy, with my LSx motor and OD trans.

Re: Fuel economy poll

I calculate my mileage off number of miles driven divided by gallons purchased. Factory unrebuilt 230, 3sp trans and 12 bolt rear end. 235/75R15 tires 12-14mpg. Motor is starting to get tired and Im guessing the rings are starting to wear some after 51 years, so I expect a few miles per gallon lower than most with the same drivetrain that has been rebuilt or replaced.

I think my '66 got about 8, but it's been a while since I drove it.

My '92 gets 17mpg city/hwy/on fire falling off a cliff.

Re: Fuel economy poll

64 SWB using 350/350, get 16mpg. I use the same station/pump, calculate gallons used and divide into mileage traveled. My old black truck was a stock 230/3 spd, also got 16mpg as long as I kept below 65mph or so.

29.5 city/highway mix, never under 28.5 no matter how hard I drive my '64.... VW Bug. :haha:

My '66 truck actually uses no gas at all- it is very green/environmentally friendly. 100% human power any time it moves.

About 7mpg....found out my fuel pump is taking a dump--literally. Let ya know when it's running again.

Re: Fuel economy poll

If it was my DD I'd worry about mpg. But I worry more about SMILES PER MILE!!!!

Interesting results so far, everyone.

Mine IS my daily driver, I want it all! I can feel better about my 14MPG one ton now, though, after today. It doesn't get what my half ton would, but I went to a buddys place today to see about a leaking intake on a hot rod BBC Camaro. The guy with the Camaro wanted a "hot rod like you guys used to have in the 80's". NA 461BBC with a .741 lift roller cam, giant Holley dominator on a single plane intake, and 15:1 compression. He is trying to drive it every day. 3-4MPG on race gas. I think he said he was paying $600 or something for a drum.

Re: Fuel economy poll

Last time I checked many years ago I was getting around 15-17. With a brand new engine and a cam I have no idea what it gets now. I suppose I don't really care that much anymore as I'm retired and the truck is just for fun.

leaky quadrajet on vortec headed 350, 350 TH and 3.73 posi with 255 60 15s (27 inch tires) getting 9 on freeway going 70...

recently put a good performer carb (edelbrok) 500cfm, will calculate new mileage and am running ported manifold vacuum to advance on the distributor and normal (unported) manifold vacuum to the transmission.

pullin 15 to 16 combined city/highway with a rebuild 230 I6 in a 65 C10. Using HEI and a Weber DGEV carb. Still tuneing and mileage increasing with each tweak to jetting. Hopeing for 18 to 19 when all finished but that might be optimistic with a factory 3 speed and 3.73 rear.

I had a '75 Dodge Power Wagon that got 12 mpg in the city, on the highway, off-road, on-road, sitting in the driveway. Never varied.......

Back in the late 80's I had a 72 GMC C20 with 1 ton rolling chassis, it had a 400/400 and got 10MPG fully loaded or empty. I even had it pulling a goose neck 2-car hauler and it got 10MPG period.

1964 C10 SWB, 350 (mild cam, quadrajet, manifolds-dual exhaust), TH400 (shift kit), 3.73:1 12-bolt, 31x10.5R15 = 13mpg (averaged total miles per fill-up over hundreds of trips mixed driving)

1964 C10 SWB, 402 (stock), TH400 (shift kit), 3.73:1 12-bolt, 31x10.5R15 = 11mpg (averaged total miles per fill-up over dozens of trips mixed driving)

1966 K20 SWB, 402 (stock), SM465, NP205, 4.11:1 14BFF+D44, 35x12.5R16 = 12mpg (hoping, wishing, dreaming!)

My truck is a '65 GMC 1500, 305 V6 with HEI, Holley 500 2BBL, single 2 1/2" exhaust with Magnaflow muffler, SM420 and 4.10 axle. I have spent a lot of time tweaking the carb and ignition advance curve.

The best I have done is 16 MPG empty at 60 MPH. I have never checked the "around town" mileage.

I usually haul a 8 1/2' camper, and weigh 7100 on the scale. I can get up to 11 MPG with camper if I keep it at 50 MPH or less on the mountain roads, but if I need to do 60 - 65 because of traffic, it drops to 8.5 to 9 MPG.

On the way home from fresno to near youngstown, Ohio, 66 LWB 327, factory everything, 3.73, 80K original miles, doing 70MPH by gps all the way (75MPH according to speedo) we got 12-13MPG steady. However, with that 4BBL and tiny primaries, i bet just staying around/under 55mph for a day would get you massive savings, like 15MPG. We were into the 4 barrels pretty much the whole time i think. Also, we were leaking fuel and sucking air into one of the fuel pump lines some, so maybe that cost us a single mpg or something.

I'm hoping with the engine rebuild (stock so low rpm torque band), and OD to bring the RPMS down, and new carb rebuild, fuel pump, etc. that i can squeeze pit 15-18 steady if i drive casually.

My '07 1500 6.0L 1/2 ton 2wd crew cab gets 15 no matter what, and that's with it turning half the cylinders off on light cruising and coasting!

Think mine gets around 15 or maybe got around 15.... 49 years ago! With 150,000 miles on it now it no doubt gets a little worse mileage than before.
