any tips on painting a steering wheel

is it ready to paint or do you have cracks to fill? i used jb weld epoxy to fill my cracks and alot of hand sanding.

no not yet im planning on sandblasting it.thx for the tip on filling the cracks.do you use primer

I used pc7 epoxy, and 320grit sanding, then plastic adhesion promoter, then plastic primer then plastic gloss black. I'd be afraid sand blasting it would eat up the wheel instead of just cleaning it.

Do not sandblast it. I did that and it messed it up. Good thing i had another. I even used glass bead and that was too coarse. Sand it only.

Clean it real good with rags and lacquer thinner.
Then sand with 120 grit or so.
Find all the cracks and "V" them out with a hack saw blade.
Fill the Vs with PC-7 and let cur completely.
Then re-sand to smooth out where it's filled.
Make sure the transition is smooth and flawless.
Primer. Base Coat. Clear Coat. Good auto paint goes a long way here.

This is what I did to turn a giveaway POS 47 Ford wheel into the a pretty good looker. Took an evening and morning.

Visit my website to see my SW restoration instructions including videos. Just look through the subjects at the top of the page beneath the banner/header under the "more" section. I used KBS Coatings NuMetal to fill cracks but other epoxy putty works just as well. It will look good if you take time. It will look brand new if you take your time and then detail sand it before painting. I would recommend epoxy paint so the paint is as durable as possible.

I just sanded by hand w/some 400 grit and worked up to 800 after I filled the cracks. Like mentioned above, use a good quality primer that will adhere nicely and you'll be fine.
