replace engine oil cooling hoses with bulk hose + clamp?
Lines on factory engine oil cooler lines are leaking like a sieve at the original clamp locations.
I've found posts online of people cutting off the original crimp sleeve and replaced the line with oil cooler hose + worm gear clamps. Anyone here done it? I'm thinking of trying but worried about the worm gear clamp + hose coming off. With the OEM sleeve the sleeve itself is attached to the hard line and cannot be pulled off. So the hose is being held by the tubing barbs and the outer sleeve. |

I have cut the OEM crimp sleeves from 99 heater hoses and the nipples had nice barbs for std heater hoses. Some of the quick disconnects had no barbs and required more work.
I just removed the 99 oil cooler system all together; no tow, light loads, short hop city driving plus hwy driving application. Worm gear hose clamps are pretty reliable but they make me a little nervous too. They have never failed me on the road but I've had some strip out. I have a high degree of confidence with oetiker clamps. I've used them for years on compressed air lines with zero leaks. |

Thanks for the tip on those clamps.
Here's the thread that I found on using bulk hose. |
Re: replace engine oil cooling hoses with bulk hose + clamp?
when i changed out the rad on my '90 stepper, one of the oil cooler lines snapped ( it has about a 8" hard line coming out the rad before it changes to a hose). i flared both ends of the broken line & put a piece of 80 psi hose in between. been that way for 4 yrs now, no leaks, no problems.
when i use hose clamps, i put 2 on each end with the heads one eighty apart |

^^ at first i just slid the hose over, got a block & it came off (nice mess), put just a single flare on it to give the hose & clamps a bite.

Thanks.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to give it a try. May get a flaring tool to make the bubble larger first though.

Re: replace engine oil cooling hoses with bulk hose + clamp?
For anything critical I like to use these from West Marine
"ABA OF AMERICA Heavy-Duty 316 Stainless-Steel Hose Clamps" They cost more, for sure, but for something like an engine oil cooler line, the cost of these clamps is 'chump change' with viewed on the back side of an engine failure due to loss of lubricant. |

Make sure that bulk hose is oil resistant/approved for oil use...

Interesting that hose vendors hide what the max temp is of their hoses. Had to contact Derale to get their specs (300F) of their 1/2" engine oil cooler hose. |
