clipped 1957 chev truck column angle

camaro clipped 1957 chev truck. for my steering shaft to line up with my after market steering column it looks like i would have to extend the hole in the fire wall up by 2 or more inches. (thats 2 or more inches from what you see in pics)
What other options have guys done. |

Depending on what clip you used, if it's like mine, yes, I raised it up to where the angle is where the firewall meets the floor.
Mind you, the last time I posted a pic of it, there was a comment of it's danger if you get into a front crash.;) I also went with the aftermarket u-joints vs the stock ones. They gave me alittle more flex at the gear box as the column gets raised. |

The quickest one I could find is a inside of the cab picture. It shows how high I went with it.
If I have gone about 1/2" to 3/4" lower it would have relieved alittle angle on the front joint. I also liked it high because I hope when I put the carpet in, I have a clean fit, not much cutting around the column. |

If you look at some conversions the U-joint angles are insane. No doubt you can fix what's in the 1st pic w/ scrapyard parts. The cheesey factory U-joint is hurting you.
Might also consider a conversion to later model through the firewall, not floor conversion. |

I used a steering section from a Chevy Astro after seeing it in some posts here. I have a 55 2nd series with a 77 Camaro clip. Still need to put a set of headers in before I make a bracket to mount the shaft to. It has a double joint in it that keeps the shaft at a good angle.

Check out my build thread "my 57 revitalized" you can see that my steering shaft is almost straight and I went high with the column. Right to the crease.
My subframe is a "custom" G body clip. |

If you look at my build thread, " my 57 revitalized" you can see in post #38 that the shaft is straight. you have to go high, like to the crease.
steering box ahead of the front wheels. |

you have a lot of column sticking thru the firewall, pull the column up 2 inches to see if it fits better
the column needs to be tight to the dash, a zero drop for maximum leg/knee room i set my column tight to the dash, when i installed the speedo cluster i had to grind a flat on the bottom of the bezel i used an astro/safari van column. i think the s10 is the same stepsidejim: i think the steel dash would be your biggest concern in a front end collision with your column that low, it looks like knee room is limited, though you can probably tilt the wheel up to fix it http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/n...0529091519.jpg http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/n...e/truck063.jpg |

I was told a 30 inch column is the best length, but after I installed it, I could have used a 28 incher also.
