Fuel filler question

The previous owner of my truck moved the fuel filler to inside the bed in the wheel tub. I am having trouble with the hose rubbing the tire and want to get an original filler neck for a 77 and put it in the bed side. From what I can tell, in 77 they did not come with a gas door. My question is, does anyone know how they were mounted from the factory? I am trying to figure out if it is as simple and using a hole saw and making the appropriate size hole and putting the filler neck through from the backside or is it more elaborate?

3 screws hold the metal piece to the bed.

So, I just use a hole saw and put a hole in the bedside and mount it?

Not exactly. In 77 the truck gas hole was stamped into the side of the bed. It was recessed into the side when it was stamped. My question is where did your hole go?

There really should be a gasket also between the filler neck and the bed. That would be very easy to make. The original filler hole has to be on the bed somewhere. I would try to recover that opening.

Pretty sure the PO filled it in when he moved it to the bed. I will get under it tonight and look from the backside and see.

If the tank is on the driver side then the bed may not have had a filler hole as the passenger side was the factory location for single tank trucks for that year. I have a crate full of filler necks for 73-78.

The tank is on the passenger side.
