Recommended performance upgrades?
 

Before I go to college this fall, I would really like to make my truck run better. Here's some quick info on my truck as it sits:

Engine: 350, Carter AFB 4bbl, Edelbrock intake, headers w/dual straight pipes.
Transmission: stock TH350.
4:10 rearend.

Does anyone have any ideas for some fairly cheap performance upgrades?

If you have not done it yet, the biggest performance bang for your buck is a real tune-up. Get the distributor tuned, fresh parts, and dialed in for proper mechanical & vacuum advance, fresh wires and plugs. Next check plugs for clues to carb function, not to lean, not to rich. If this is already done, what is your budget for mods?

If you want to save yourself a lot of headaches, change from the points to an HEI,you won't regret it!

I guess I should've asked this question first: Is a 2 wheel drive 3/4 ton pickup worth modifying? It's not fast by any means.

It already came with HEI when I bought it.

Of course it is, Start with all the safety stuff first, brakes, suspension, steering, then mod away with performance goodies.

So cover the basics like they said,
tune up: cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter & Check Your Timing (often overlooked and believe it or not it isn't always on) this only takes a minute

As mentioned by Lee H read your plugs - http://www.4secondsflat.com/Spark_plug_reading.html

Then you can make carb adjustments to help efficiency (efficiency = performance too)

The basics can go a long way...

Do a compression test and a leak down test (if you have access to a leak down tester) to see if all cylinders are similar. Might not be a bad idea to go through and check the valve adjustment while you're under the hood.
