Frame painting and rust removal.
 

The box is coming off my truck so it can get replaced. Does any one have any suggestions to clean up the rust that isn't gonna create clouds upon clouds of rusty dust? I live on an alley and i don't want to coat every ones garages in a staining coat of red dust.


The next question \is about paint. What is good? I'm not sure I wanna go through the trouble and cost to POR15 it. I'd like something cheap, that i can brush on and, that won't fall off next week.


Am I asking too much?

The only way I know of to avoid the red dust cloud is to either hand sand or to soak down the frame as you work. Then you only end up with a red mud puddle.

As far as paint, I would recommend tremclad. Buy the can and brush it on, not the spraybomb. I find brushing it on when its a bit cooler out allows the paint to flow a bit and forgives the brush strokes. Looks almost like powder coating when it dries.

Well, I guess I understand it's gonna be dusty and I know something will need to be done to protect my lungs. But am I being paranoid that the dust is gonna settle on everything and stain rust on it?

I deal with rust dust every day. It'll wash off some things. I've been breathing it in for a year though too. It'll be ok.

Rust dust won't kill u, just make u look like u were snorting pixy sticks. U can cut down on the dust buy using a small electric sander, air tools are faster but they spit it everywhere. But in the long run the dust won't travel to far, if there us wind then your screwed but we I'm in the process of helping.a buddy do .a ground on a 55 bellaire wagon and the dust stays within 10ft of the car. And we are using air powered DA's.

I'm. not so much worried about breathing the dust, but I am paranoid about ****ing up the houses and garages around me in my alley where I will be working.

wet it and wire wheel it with a drill then spray bomb with anti rust primer in black (rustoleum) works well and lasts, then go over it with a semi gloss black looks great and lasts a long time!!!

Its fun after all the sweat and the O s#$&'s that it looks that good. I did that for mine a while back. your paint looks way better then mine though. the wire brush idea is good, I agree with wetting it down if your worried about your nabors. Dont feal like you have to get every bit of rust off though. the rust killer is a good thing, just get the loose stuff then spray it with rustoleum. use it at a primer then paint it what you want it really does work great.

Thanks for the tips! I'm gonna hit it with a wire wheel and needle scaler, then brush on Rustoleum 7400 series paint. ( http://www.rustoleum.com/product-cat...c-alkyd-enamel ) I wish they had a semi gloss black, but flat will be fine. I have a connection at the a Sherwin Williams store, so I'm gonna go talk with him and see what he recommends. This is by no means a show truck, or fancy. Hell, it's barely nice. But I want to clean it up while I've got the room. We did some painting on the old box last night. Scrapper is coming this morning to pick it up...

Lots of work to do! Got the bed off today. Gotta fix the frame where the abomination of a rear bumper was welded to it and ruined the frame. Gotta wire wheel and needle scale everything and mop some paint on it, run new brake lines, run new fuel lines and replace at least one fuel tank.

Got all the brackets off I could. Got the left tank out. Wire wheeled a lot of it and mopped on some Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer on what I got cleaned. Gonna sandblast all the brackets and paint them before putting them back on. Gonna borrow a needle scaler and get in and around the spring brackets. Wasn't nearly as dusty as I thought it would be. I guess I was just being paranoid.

Isn't it amazing how much easier things are with the box off? When i took mine off i redid it all and swapped axles. Now redoing it all again lol

I took the box off so I can replace it with one that isn't ruined. My truck was all but unusable as a pick-up with the bed that was on it. But yes, things are way, way easier.

Was it easy to get the bed bolts off. I plan on taking mine off soon. My 87, I had to cut some of them off with a torch....

Getting the bed off wasn't hard, but it wasn't easy. Torch would have made it easy. between rust, and the truck having a water tank in the bed for a long time all of the bolts had to be hacked away at with a cutoff wheel to get the bed off.

I plan going with rhino lining on my under-carriage, and possibly the floor pans, but i'm not going for "original stock" as of right now just something that will last another 30 years, and my grandkids will think is cool
