Dumb question about timing

Trying to set timing on an 82 c10 with a 350. When I advance my timing my truck idles better but the idle goes up. At this point I know I am supposed to take it down with the idle control on the carb (holley) but it doesn't change. Any ideas? Also got a wicked backfire only when I turn the truck off.

Also any idea why the truck would idle high but well in park and then fall on its face and die when put in gear?

did you remove the vacuum advance b4 you set the timing and plug the line, and your timing is prob to high that's why u r getting a backfire. others may chime in but that's where would start

Yes vacuum advance is plugged. It is a brand new msd dist and a new holley carb.

recheck the wires make sure the are in order , get a timing gun if you hv not already , your timing is either to low or to high. I cant remember if its backfiring thru carb, or thru exhaust , 1 of these is an indicator of low timing and 1 is an indicator of high timing

Which holley carb?
The secondaries can be adjusted to slow down your idle.
It backfires due to lack of timing.
It dies when you put it in gear due to lack of timing.
