1967 GMC V8 Engine qestion
Could anyone tell me if a 1967 4X4 truck has a partial VIN stamped on the block by the engine code? I've read conflicting things. My VIN is pretty low if that might make any difference.

The engine I have in my truck is not the original so I am going to be looking for a replacement

Re: 1967 GMC V8 Engine qestion
GM started stamping partial VIN's on the pad, in some car lines, around 1960.
In the late 1960's Congress was pressing manufactures to put identification numbers on engines to cut down on theft. In my readings, trucks did not get partial VIN's until much later. |

Some good info here on engine codes. http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php

Yeah the Nastyz28 website is very helpful in identifying engines. I guess my real question is does anybody actually own a 67 with an original engine that could tell me if their vehicle has the VIN stamp anywhere?

Everything I have read indicates that a partial VIN was not stamped on 1967 truck engines.

Re: 1967 GMC V8 Engine qestion
The way I understand it,from '60 till late in the '67 production,no GMCs got V8s. The VIN would be a KE VIN. What is your engine code?

Re: 1967 GMC V8 Engine qestion
Nope, sorry. My 67 has a 70 or 72 (Same suffix, TAX) 350 block 0010...

Re: 1967 GMC V8 Engine Question
I'm probably going to be looking for a 327 with engine code YS. Does anyone know what the A.I.R. option is?

Re: 1967 GMC V8 Engine qestion
I wouldn't ask for a VIN to be posted here. Just wanted to establish if your truck was in fact a KE model, which is 4wd V8. The VIN tells nothing specific about an engine. The suffix code (letters at end of stamped engine number) does, but you are working from the other end since you know you don't have the original engine.
WB,WI,or WO would be a 283 2bbl w/manual transmission 175hp YM would be a 327 4bbl w/manual transmission 220hp At least some of these codes can be found on other trucks with different ratings, but these are the codes that would be on an engine that came in your truck |
Re: 1967 GMC V8 Engine qestion
By no means do I think you we're trying to get a VIN out of me. I just wanted to show that this is in fact an early run V8 because I've also read that the V8's didn't get released until later in the year. Thanks for the engine code info. That will help me immensely. I'm guessing it probably originally had the 283 because besides the 4X4 this truck had almost no options on it.

jmader, just wanted to suggest that you X out the last 4 numbers of the vin in post 9. Those numbers are your serial number and they are unique to your truck. The other numbers and letters (except the assembly plant code) can be figured out just by looking at the truck. So the numbers you should guard are the serial numbers and the assy plant code. Here is a 67 gmc, USA built, VIN Number decoder, so you can see what I'm saying.
EDIT: Also edit the number in post 1 (#XX) Attachment 1148746 |
