Exhaust System
 

I've got a 1977 shortbed stepside, it has a small block with stock manifolds and a TH400 trans. Dropped it 6 out back and 4 in the front. Truck is a new build. Thought I'd forego doing the exhaust on my own and went to a recommended shop for a dual exhaust install. It turned out to be a real bad experience so I'm going to redo it myself. I'm hoping some of you can point me toward some kit options I can buy and install myself. Looking for something quiet so I can take this truck on longer outings. Any picture of stuff you've done would also be appreciated. Thanks for the help, Jim M.

As far as kits it just depends on what you want exactly 2.5" should be fine with a stock set up. The link I'm attaching is a link to summitracing.com and it's all the exhaust systems they have for our trucks. Now typically I've learned the larger the muffler the quiter it will be, it doesn't show on here but you could even search magnaflow and flowmasters main websites and might find some kits there.

if you are handy with a welder and have a chop saw available, summit sells a universal kit with a couple of u bends, 45, 90, straights, etc and you can get them with a mid pipe. I would suggest getting one of those kits and just fabbing your own system.

Well are you planning on running a true dual exhaust or just single muffler with like a 2 in 2 out?

True duals. Hooker comp headers, probably DynoMax or Magnaflow mufflers.

No reason to do a H pipe then, just put the true dual exhaust and call it done.

I would do a h pipe if you can it helps even out the exhaust on both sides and gives a little more power.

I don't want to start a big arguement or anything I just want to know how doing an H pipe on a true dual helps it. Cause to me it seems more or less that it would cause more restriction than anything.

X-pipes and H-pipes have shown to be worth power on dynos pretty much ever since someone thought of doing it. It helps merge high pressure pulse areas and improves scavenging on dual exhaust. You wouldn't need an X or H on a single exhaust so I'm not sure how you're wondering how it wouldn't help on true duals... They wouldn't even be around if they weren't working on dual exhaust.

That is very but I was told it wasn't necessary to do it, that it wouldn't be giving me that much more power. Would it also depend on your set up to or is it just an overall you should do an x or h pipe? Cause on my truck I have longtube headers, and flowmaster 10 series mufflers which that combo is pretty much the equivalent of running open headers just toned down a couple notches.

Jim, since you asked, I'll tell you how I do it. I'm assuming you also want free flowing as well. What I do is install 2 different types of mufflers to cancel out the high frequency and low frequency sound. I accomplish this by using a good quality glasspack such as Thrush and a good quality baffle type muffler such as Flowmaster. The Flowmasters do good at canceling out the low frequency sound and the glasspacks do good at canceling out the high frequency sound. For as quiet as possible, install long glasspacks or install 2 shorter ones in series.

I've done this on all my custom exhaust work and it always works out great. Only thing is you do end up spending a little more for mufflers but the results are worth it. You can also tune your exhaust. If you want more low frequency, you would use a baffle muffler with less baffles. If you want more high frequency, you would use a shorter glasspack. And yes, use an H pipe or X pipe as previously mentioned. That too cuts down on the noise and makes your exhaust less restrictive.

if i was u since u want quite is just go with two thrush mufflers thats at advance or autozone they are 26 bucks each run 2 1/2 pipe with turndowns after muffler unless u like full exhaust.my family member just put one on his 02 chevy it is really almost stock sounding but has a light tone thats only heard outside the truck.im a flomaster guy the hushpower line might work for you the are very mild sounding and good for tight space.
