New to me 1965' "292" from Air Force Bus
 

Just found a 1965, 292 I6 engine from an Air Force flat nosed 22' bus used at "Area 51". Bus showed 38K miles. Air Force used it as an ambulance. I have not had any time to assess the engines condition. It is a little damaged from shipping, carb and dist. Broken. It has a four speed trans w/ hyd clutch. At the back of the trans is an emergency brake as part of the drive shaft.

Initial assessment would indicate that some of the coolant hoses have factory style hose clamps that have not been reused. Color is green w/ torque decal on valve cover. Valve cover is pretty beat up.

I checked it did not have power steering , however, did have "Vac gauge" but was not pulled before recycling. Reportedly because dash hard to get out. It was in storage long time before I got it. However, reported to have been run before pulled.
More/better pics later. My hope is that it is stock inside.

Did quick look in oil filler opening in valve cover and minimum sludge, just very slight amount. So far with quick look is promising. Still hope engine is in good condition.

Anybody recognize the transmission?

I see a newer internally regulated alternator. The trans appears to be a SM420......too bad someone cut the shifter off.

Definetly a 292. Nice start...shouldn't be two much to get it going. You can get new plugs, wires, and a distributor cap, and points and a coil at Napa or Auto zone.

I know on the shifter , said to be long for removal by salvage guy!! And could not get the pin out to remove it. What is this trans used in?

Also thanks for help on ignition parts, I use NAPA a lot too.

Are the engine mounts same for K10?

I sure wish they handled the engine a little more carefully, bent some of the parts like fan.

Where is engine date code on the 292?

SM420 trans, could it be the rare 2ton version? The vehicle it came from reportedly weighted 9K lbs. wo/ engine trans when recycled. When have time , have to check the splines. Any advantage for our trucks if two ton unit??
As is obvious I am a novice on this stuff.

You do not remove the shifter by removing the pins on the side. You push down on the retainer in the center and twist counter clockwise and it pops out.

Yes the motor mounts are the same for the K series trucks. They are the same for '63-'72 C and K series trucks 10-30.

I believe the suffix code is stamped on a pad near the base of the distributor. Not sure where the date code is on the I6's


I don't know anything about a 'rare' 2 tone version SM420. I do know that the 3/4 ton version has a larger cluster gear shaft. That could also be a year difference thing. Being an advantage or not depends on what you plan to use the trans for. Most guys don't like the SM420 or the SM465 and they pull them out for an auto trans, a car 4 speed, or a 5 speed.

I far as I know...the mounts were the same. I am not sure. I know the mounts will be in the same location..but I am not sure if the style/height of them is the same.

I think you will like this engine. Just tuned up my 66 292 K10 Panel truck. If you have mounting questions or need pictures I would be glad to help. Thanks for posting the hose clamp pictures, that will help me in fixing all the mistakes PO made on this truck.

This picture of the Hydraulic clutch bellhousing in post #6 , you wont need or want it in your K10 but its the same as a 60-62 V8 , The 1960-1962 guys are looking for these as the 60-62 six cylinder hydraulic clutch bell is different where it mounts to the engine.
