Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
Hello
I've been trying to locate the source of a ticking or knocking (not sure which). The truck was running pretty good before this, but had a slight intake leak. So I thought I'd change them out. Used felpro 1205 gaskets and rtv black for china walls. After I got it back together the noise appeared. I looked for another leak haven't found one. Using a stethoscope the noise seems to be everywhere. But for some reason I think it's cam related? Tried to adjust valves but didn't help. Pulling each spark plug wire one at a time doesn't change the noise. It increases with rpm's. Stock 87 350 originally tbi converted to q-jet. Uploading a video to youtube right now. Once it's done I'll post it. |

That's one hell of a noise. What's the oil press looking like?

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
Did you change/check the oil after you were done?

45ish (mark between 30 and 60), Cold. I haven't let it run for a few minutes at a time, because of the noise.

yes I did a oil and filter change

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
Couple of thoughts. First is did the distributor get phased into the oil pump correctly? And second, did anything drop into the intake valley while intake was getting put back on?.

"Did the distributor get phased into the oil pump correctly?" Don't know how do I check that?
The oil pump shaft sounded like it came up a little when I first pulled the distributor, but fell back into place. I tripled checked for anything in the valley before putting intake back on. |

Did you pull the plugs off the distributor? You may have one that's out of sequence. That can make a racket as well

I had a similar issue when working on my BMW V8, different motor I know but I ended up taking everything apart when I heard the noise because I was scared something fell in.
Didn't find anything put it all back together and it still made the sound. Reved it up a few times and the sound went away something was ticking in the valvetrain due to lack of lubrication. Can't watch the vid at work to see if you have tried this already |
Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
Wow! That is loud. Get a piece of hose and hold to your ear while probing around. Start around the oil pan.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
Sounds in the bottom end, anything valvetrain related would be half the speed.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
You might have one of the intake bolts in the wrong hole. If you put a longer one in where a short one belongs you can have the end of the bolt binding on a pushrod.

I don't see how that loud noise is going to come out of it. It sounds like a metallic tap to me. Whatever it is , is getting damaged. I would take it apart again and do it over (and swear the whole time). Hopefully it will be obvious when you get it apart. I was thinking a valve issue at first but I don't hear it out the tailpipe. It does seem to be in the lower half of the engine. Maybe the dist/oil pump as someone already mentioned.

Ok first thing in the morning I'll pull the intake. Should I also pull the oil pan or should I just wait?

Well I've pulled the intake and drained the oil this morning. I don't see anything out of the normal, yet. Guess I'll try the pan next.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
Does the bottom of the distributor look normal? Do all the rocker arms move normally? Does the oil pump turn smoothly? That's a bummer that something in the bottom end picked this time to fail.
I spun a rod bearing once during an intake/cam change. I blamed it on contaminating the oil during the swap but the engine didn't start knocking right away. It probably took 50-100 miles before it sounded a lot like yours. That's why it's hard for me to believe that you spun a bearing so quickly on start up. Good luck. |

Oil pan removed.Ran a magnet through oil. No clucks of metal or anything that I could see. Not sure what I should be looking for now??? Last time I put a motor together was 20 years ago.

just curious...did you find any intake bolt to push rod interference when you took it apart? |
Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
mickeykreg I did check the distances, and it doesn't look like that was the problem.
One thing I did find, was the little plastic piece that the oil pump shaft goes into is broke. Not sure if that would cause all that noise, but that's something. |
Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
That might be the winner. Well sort of. Maybe the oil pump drive shaft was off center and hitting the pump body. Sounds like you need a new plastic collar.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
Give all the connecting rods a shake where they go around the crank journal while you have the pan off.
Have a friend turn the engine back and forth(by hand) while observing the rods on the journals. |

okay, as I was picking up my stuff for the day. I found a head of a bolt or something in the oil pan. Any clue where this came from.
