power window upgrades
 

Hello all,
I have been searching for possible options for my power windows.

My issues are, there are still slow even after new motors and a complete overhaul.

My vent windows always whistle some.

And my switches, through stock, are uncomfortable compared to newer trucks.


Has anyone converter to a one piece window, or found a motor that is better than another? I would love to hear if anyone has modified their panels to accommodate a newer style switch??

One piece windows can whistle worse (if you pooch the install), seach the site for some builds that did the swap.

search eBay and google for different switches, lots to choose from out there, most common I've seen are a chrome switch with an over/under button to run the windows. Only different is the switches will be two separate units (unlike the stock driver's door switch that has two switches in one unit) so most people mount then in the console between the front two seats (you'll see what I mean if you seach some images on google)

If you replaced your window felts/channels/rubber seals your window will be slow until they are broken in

I've heard of people replacing the wiring, and using the switches to control relays. The theory is that the stock wiring and switch robs too much power from the overall circuit. Replacing the wiring and using relays allows full voltage to the motor and significantly increases the motor speed.

I've never done it, but my background is in electrical engineering, and I can tell you the theory makes perfect sense.

from what i have heard the relays make the windows into upside-down guillotines! i cant wait to do it to mine!

I did the relay mod. Pretty simple. It was a diffrence of daylight and dark. I believe they are faster that my new truck. What happens with these trucks is the power has to go around the world before it gets to the window motor. It may only be running from 8 to 10 volts at the motor. The relays bring straight battery power to the motors. I used # 10ga wire to relays and motors to keep the line loss down as much as possible. Worked great for me. It is definetly worth the time and trouble.

While you're doing it, add express down to it. Then you don't have to touch the switches for so long either.

Thanks for the link. This would be a great addition to my truck. I have a lot of modurn features like automatic door locks at start up , compass/temp auto dark rear view mirror , remote door locks with timed interior light, security , electronic cruise with my ls motor , also have tailgate security with tonneau cover , and home link in overhead console for garage door.

Has anyone ever tried the relay upgrade with a power rear window like in a suburban or K5? I'd imagine that if there is enough voltage drop just getting to the door windows of a pickup to be noticable, the drop all the way to the rear of a suburban must really be significant.

I'm close to diving into the tailgate of my 80 Suburban once the weather gets just a bit warmer. The wiring is probably similar enough that I think I'll give the relay project a try.
