65 V8 long water pump, FAN SHROUD ideas?

A stock one won't fit and I don't want to cut up the perfect oe one that I purchased to make it fit. An aftermarket plastic one won't work and if cut down will have too large of fan opening by the time it fits ( 4" from rad to center blade)

Anyone run into this? Solution?

My thoughts are fab up a nice sheet metal shroud or ditch all of the LWP stuff from the front of the engine and go with Short Water Pump stuff.

Hoping someone says " oh yeah, just get a shroud from a ______and trim it :)

That's why I typically stick with short water pumps on the vehicles that originally came with them. Is your engine in the original location? I have seen other members run the long pump with a stock fan shroud, but when I tried it once, it didn't work. Not sure what the difference was.

^^^^^^ NICE! Now how good are you at shoving small cameras into tight spaces and getting a few pics? I would love to see which fan and clutch they are. My fan is flat and bolts to the backside of a fairly small clutch. Does the end of the taper area of the shroud land about half way through the fan blade if you dropped a plumb bob?

Thanks James!

I doubt you want to go electric fan but if you do I used a Lincoln Mark VIII fan. I had to trim a little off the top of the shroud to clear the radiator tanks and the radiator hoses and fab up brackets t mount it but I think it looks like it belongs there. While I was at it I installed a Radiator Overflow/Windshield Washer combo off a Ford Exploder.

ck out a chevelle big block 66/67 shroud. they are a little wider and bolt on flat but real short. can take a pic and measure if you want.

That would be great. Measurements too if it's not too much to ask.

Thanks!

That's a nice looking engine compartment! Thanks for the idea , but trying to stick with the parts I have ( cheap ). I like the washer/res you came up with too. Hopefully you ground off the blue oval! hehehe

The fan is off of a GM truck, I got it from board member teeitup he deals in 67-72.

Newfisher, do you realy need the thermostatic fan, if you just bolted on a 5 blade stock fan it would put it right where uou need it..?

I have had an aftermarket one mounted without the clutch and bought a few stock choices to play around with. Do I need one? Probobly not ,but its the little projects now that the truck is pretty much done, that keep me from buying another truck! I'm looking to change the MPG's on this thing with a fan clutch, some rear gears that work with the 700r4 and the 235/75/15s and either use my Holley projection or a quadrajet etc to maximize the economy side. In the end I will have spent more time and money farting with the little projects than it would take to drop an LS engine in it and at that point this thread is mute with the electric fan set up :) it keeps me off the couch and not wasting cash on 401k plans or house remodels lol

I have found that a 86 suburban 350 fan and an aftermarket fan clutch with NO shroud runs cooler indicated on the gauge than an aftermarket fan bolted direct drive to the pump without a shroud.

Not factory looking but I've run an aftermarket chrome one for the past 15 years or so like this https://www.google.com/search?q=chro...90825447058319

I`m running the short pump, engine mounts in the rear hole of crossmember, with fan shroud and 2.5 inch fan spacer, so theoretically I can change to a long water pump if I decided to change everything else, biggest issue is what holes the owners are using in the mount/crossmember..
